Margaret van Baaren is the head coach for the girls' varsity volleyball program and director for the Center for Academic Strategies and Achievement (CASA, for short); in addition, Margaret teaches Diversity and Social Justice and facilitates a Student Life Seminar. Margaret hails from Brooklyn and taught for 12 years in the New York City public school system before joining the NMH faculty in 1994. Van Baaren received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Kenyon College (where she played volleyball, captaining the team her senior year) and her master’s in special education with a concentration in learning disabilities from Hunter College. Margaret's husband, Harry, works in NMH Communications; Margaret and Harry have three children - an NMH alum at Wesleyan, a current NMH senior, and a current NMH ninth grader. Outside of NMH, Margaret is an interfaith minister licensed to perform weddings. The NMH Varsity finished the 2016 season with a winning record and looks forward to a new season with some great additions to the team. Look for strong hitting from Maya Nayman '19 and Betty Zhang '21 on the right side, Ashlin Spitzer '21 and Alisa Canney '19 in the middle, co-captain Steph Voge '18 and Sahara Abizaid '19 on the outside. Strong passing will come from Voge, Abizaid, Leah Leslie '19, and Nayman. Co-captain, Siobhan Moore '19, anchors the offense as setter. After a very successful preseason, this year's team is ready to play!
