The Chat

Dance the night away under the stars!

With the end of the school year comes the senior prom, known at NMH as “the Chat.” The name is derived from the Chateau, the magnificent 99-room reproduction of a French chateau in Northfield where it was originally held, starting in 1939.

The romantic atmosphere of the Chateau made it an ideal senior-prom setting. Unfortunately, over the decades the Chateau’s girders rusted and its concrete cracked, leading to the building being torn down in 1963. After its demolition, a number of locations were tried for the dance, but none proved satisfactory until someone had the idea of putting up a tent south of Ford Cottage, the head of school’s home, where it’s still held today.
