Leadership and Service

Do you like taking responsibility and making decisions? Do you like having a say about how things get done?

Would you welcome the chance to develop your leadership skills? Here are some opportunities for you:

  • Student Congress is the liaison between students and the administration. Members are elected by their peers, and subcommittees deal with everything from academics to dining to student activities to community concerns.
  • Resident Leaders and Day Student Leaders serve in the dorms and are mentors, role models, and organizers. These positions are coveted by juniors and seniors and are filled after an interview process with the deans. RLs and DSLs serve as a link between faculty, staff, and students, and are expected to live up to community standards at all times and address students who don’t.
  • Peer Educators receive training in health education to help their peers make healthy and safe choices. As a peer educator, you'll serve as a resource and will help develop informative and interactive workshops.
  • Peer Mediators have an intense job: guiding peers in resolving interpersonal conflicts with each other or even between students and faculty. The program's philosophy is to be “multipartial"— you work on behalf of all parties involved. NMH’s peer mediation is the only boarding school program with a social-justice component.

Service Opportunities

NMH students are not only bright and curious, they’re also compassionate and generous. We do everything we can to enable them to put those qualities to work. NMH is proud of its dedication to community service — this is where the head, heart, and hand work together to benefit the greater community.
