Grace
Skillman, New Jersey

At NMH, Grace learned not just ideas and concepts, but also how to learn, something she’ll carry with her for life.

My activities at NMH:

Resident Leader, varsity swimming and cross-country, Debate Society president, viola player

What brought me to NMH:

My brother went to NMH and loved his time here.

Something new I tried for the first time at NMH:

Logging new plant species on iNaturalist

The most challenging part of my time at NMH:

Remembering to check in on time every day … but it gets better!

My favorite activity:

Running to Upinngill Farm with Kimberly!

My favorite class:

Sophomore World Literature with Richard Sell!

What’s special to me about NMH is that our identity is never an ‘or’; it’s always an ‘and,’ because you can pick up so many different roles across campus. It’s not a singular role that defines you, but the conglomeration of everything you do.”

My favorite food in Alumni Hall:

Apple crisp and bibimbap.

My favorite NMH tradition:

The gospel choir during MLK Week. It’s always so fun to be singing in the chapel after swim practice!

My favorite spot on campus:

The blue chairs on the Bev Lawn. It’s always nice to hang out there with friends and a special treat when your English teachers take you out to read there for class!

Advice I would give myself if I could go back to my first day at NMH:

Explore all the gems nearby campus: Upinngill Farm, the Vermont County Deli … I’ll never forgive myself for only doing this my senior year.

What’s special to me about NMH:

Your identity is never an “or”; it’s always an “and,” because you can pick up so many different roles across campus. It’s not a singular role that defines you, but the conglomeration of everything you do.

How NMH has changed me:

Beyond concrete ideas and concepts, NMH taught me “how to learn,” a philosophy I will carry on with me in life

What I will miss most about NMH:

The fall foliage views.

Plan for the fall:

I will be studying at Columbia College in New York City.
