Back to School 2020

We plan to resume teaching and learning on campus this fall.

As we look forward to having our students here at NMH, please keep in mind that this is our initial plan; it is subject to change in response to evolving circumstances. Please check back frequently as we will continue to share additional details in the weeks ahead.

Back to School Plan

Important: Updated Travel Rules

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker recently announced updated travel requirements starting Aug. 1 for individuals traveling to Massachusetts from outside of New England, New Jersey, and New York state. These travelers must quarantine for 14 days following their arrival in Massachusetts. Travelers are exempt from the quarantine requirement if they can show proof of a negative COVID-19 test result with the sample taken no more than 72 hours prior to their arrival in Massachusetts. Because NMH is prioritizing health and safety on campus, families must secure an additional negative test result following the student’s arrival to the greater New England area but before they are on campus. This mitigates the concern that testing prior to arrival may miss a recent infection. As we prepare for students’ arrivals, we continue to review data, medical literature, and expert advice, and monitor COVID-19 prevalence in the United States. We have modified our procedures to reflect changing information.

  • All students are still required to have a test as close as possible to their NMH arrival. We understand that there are significant delays in testing, both domestically and internationally, and we will allow tests taken more than five days prior to arrival to ensure that results are available. These tests are the first step in ensuring that students are not asymptomatic carriers.

  • Students participating in on-campus quarantine will be tested upon arrival at NMH and again five to seven days after arrival. Students who test positive will be isolated on campus until they are COVID-free.

  • Students arriving on campus during the phased arrival starting Aug. 25 will be tested upon arrival and at the end of the first week of classes, which begin Aug. 31. Any students who test positive will be isolated on campus.

  • Use this resource to locate testing options. Please note that there are home-testing options available.

Important: If families decide to test prior to travelling instead of quarantining in the region or on campus, they must notify the deans’ office immediately at deansofficereply@nmhschool.org or 413-498-3423. NMH will continue to offer the 14-day on-campus quarantine option for those students who registered.

We expect that the COVID-19 landscape will continue to evolve in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Our goal is to provide you enough lead time to plan for your return to NMH considering the current MA state requirement to self-quarantine in MA on arrival. We also want to remind all our students that they should minimize the risk of exposure to the coronavirus for 14 days prior to their planned arrival on campus (i.e., limit exposure to large crowds, wear a facial covering, maintain physical distancing, and practice regular handwashing). All NMH students — wherever they are — will be required to complete an online health screening questionnaire daily beginning on August 10 (stay tuned for details).
