Jan. 10, 2022 — The Northfield Mount Hermon boys’ national basketball team is ranked #1 in the country and heads into 2022 competition undefeated with a 14-0 record so far this season. The NMH boys’ national team is the school’s elite varsity team. The team earned a #1 ranking in the National Prep Poll, according to the independent sports league Grassroots XL.
“This is the fourth time that NMH has been ranked #1 in the country,” said Head Coach John Carroll ’89, P ’23, noting that the team also achieved this ranking in 2011, 2013, and 2018.
He added, “This is the first time in history that NMH has gone undefeated in a calendar year, and the best start for NMH in over 28 years.”
NMH hasn’t lost a game since March of 2020 in the National Championship Final Four against Putnam Science Academy, according to Carroll. On Jan. 16, NMH will play #2 ranked Putnam in the HoopHall Prep Showcase at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts.
NMH Athletic Director Debby Ghezzi noted that current NMH players will attend Northwestern University, Columbia University, Lafayette College, and the University of Texas.
She said, “Congratulations to all the student-athletes and Coaches John Carroll and Jackson Johnson for their hard work so far this season.”
Carroll is in his 21st year at NMH and is the winningest coach in the school’s athletics history. In November, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Assumption University, where he graduated in 1993, finishing his college career as the leading three-point shooter in the school’s history and scoring over 1,500 points for the Greyhounds.
