Martin Luther King (MLK) Week

On MLK Day, Northfield Mount Hermon does not take the day off. 

Instead, it’s a day on, and part of a full week of learning and activities dedicated to the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — reflecting our commitment to inclusivity, learning for life, and service.

For MLK Week 2023, NMH welcomed Ndaba Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela and co-founder and chair of the Mandela Institute for Humanity. On Jan. 18, Ndaba Mandela visited classes and delivered a keynote speech at an all-school meeting before having lunch with students and faculty. Much of his work centers on sharing the legacy of his grandfather, Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid activist who was the country’s first Black head of state and its first president elected in a fully representative democratic election.

MLK Week is planned by students, led by the Student Diversity Committee and in cooperation with the Office of Multicultural Affairs. 

In addition to a special guest speaker, the week’s activities included a gospel concert performance by Camerata Baltimore and a jazz concert by NMH student musicians. Academic classes, advisory group discussions, student activities, and all-school reading assignments focus on MLK-related themes of social justice and equality.
