Academics

A well-grounded education can take you anywhere.

Now, more than ever, you need a place where you’ll be supported as you take a deep dive into the challenges — and joys — of an intense college-prep program.

NMH offers a chance to go further. And do more. It starts in small, flexible classes with some of the most dedicated teachers you’ll ever meet. From there, ideas expand and borders start to break down: between math and social justice, for example, or between science and dance, or between the campus community and the world at large.

While COVID-19 has changed how we think about organizing an NMH education this year, what it has not changed — not one bit — is the excellence of our faculty or our curriculum, or the distinctness of the NMH experience. We’ll encourage you to push your intellectual boundaries and take on projects that allow you to make discoveries about yourself. We’ll offer guidance and mentorship as you explore, succeed, and, yes, occasionally fail. Along the way, you’ll find that you love writing poetry, or that you’re a natural with calculus, or that your singing voice can light up an audience. When you explore and take chances, you start to develop a love of learning that can last a lifetime.

By the time you graduate from NMH, you’ll be more than ready for what’s next. Highly selective schools like Brown and the University of Chicago, big public research universities like the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia, private urban universities like NYU and Boston University, small NESCAC schools like Connecticut College and Middlebury — you’ll have a range choices as you seek YOUR best fit.

We’ll support your journey every step of the way. As you go beyond the classroom, engaging with your peers in clubs and community service, on teams, in the dorms, you’ll learn to think like and be a citizen of the world.

Excellent Teachers

Our teachers represent the heart of the college-prep experience at NMH. As highly credentialed scholars, they’re the equal of any boarding-school faculty in the country. Passionate and utterly committed, they will inspire you, nurture your interests, and motivate you to excel.

Strong Academics

Our College-Model Academic Program (CMAP) provides the richest possible educational experience and gives you a glimpse of what college will be like. You’ll spend more time in class with your teachers, which allows for deeper discussion and understanding of what you're studying.

Our wide range of academic courses across departments provides learning experiences that can be tough, fascinating, meaningful, and, yes, fun. Combine that with our informed, personal college counseling program, and you'll find that an NMH education not only prepares you for what comes after high school, but will also challenge you to broaden your view of the world while refining your image of yourself.

Too Many Opportunities to Count

The classroom is just the beginning. In a typical year, our international programs might take you from our Massachusetts campus to Uruguay to study Spanish, or to South Africa or Brazil with our Humanities II curriculum. Our working farm is a living laboratory where you can conduct college-level experiments in plant biology and soil ecology, learn to make maple syrup, and grow organic vegetables for the dining hall. You can dig deeper into your favorite subjects through student organizations like Model UN and the Robotics Club, or exercise your artistic creativity in the amazing Rhodes Arts Center. The possibilities are almost endless.
