College-Prep, Step by Step

Thinking about college starts early for all NMH students. Right away, you’ll work with your academic advisor and, eventually, the school’s college-counseling team to get you on the right track for college. 

• In ninth grade, you’ll be encouraged to try activities, to begin identifying where your interests and talents lie. You’ll begin developing the intellectual skills you’ll need in college. And you’ll practice for the college-entrance exams by taking the PSAT.
• Sophomore year, you’ll continue building your college-prep “résumé” with the help of your academic advisor.
• Junior year, the college-search process gets more focused. You’re assigned your own college counselor and take a college-counseling class to learn how the application process works. You’ll take college-admission tests, attend college fairs, and start making a list of colleges and universities that interest you.
• By senior year, you’ll be fully prepared to choose, visit, and apply. Your college counselor will help you find a balance between the institutions you aspire to, and those that are likely to accept you. You’ll take the final round of college-admission exams and learn how to ace those applications. You’ll meet regularly all year with your college advisor and academic advisor, who will guide you through the many activities that culminate in those coveted letters of acceptance.

Starting in your junior year, your college counselor will help you narrow down that intimidating number of institutions into a suitable selection. Then you’ll work together through the application decision processes.

Naturally, your counselor understands the intricate world of college-entrance exams, visits, and applications. By the time you’re ready to choose a college, your counselor will also know you well. Your academic strengths and challenges. Your personality. Your interests. Your goals. It’s a partnership that lasts at least until you’ve made a final decision about where to study after NMH.
