NMH School Profile

Greetings from Cottage III, home of the College Counseling Office at Northfield Mount Hermon. My name is Joe Latimer and I serve as the director of college counseling at NMH. Our staff are talented and collaborative college counselors who guide our students — and their family members — as they navigate NMH and make the most of their time here toward exciting outcomes after graduation. We not only serve as college counselors, we are also teachers, coaches, advisors, and mentors, and many of us also live in the residence halls. The relationships we build with students outside of college counseling foster connections that not only support students throughout their journey at NMH, but help guide conversations about their goals and plans after graduation. 

During the second part of a student’s junior year, college counselors serve as instructors of a course designed to help students understand the college search and selection process that soon awaits them. College counseling instructors continue working with each of the students in their class throughout the college process.

While there are complexities around applying for college admission, financial aid, and scholarships, you can rely on the NMH College Counseling Office for timely and accurate answers to your questions about the process. 

Our annual college fair, as well as individual visits from college representatives from across the country and around the world, will help build relationships between our students and college admissions staff. These relationships ensure that NMH students are contextualized during their application review — because not all secondary schools or high school students are alike. 

While juniors typically launch into the process of understanding what it takes to put their best foot forward as a college applicant, our office also fully supports students who join NMH as seniors or postgraduates. Over the summer, we send information to these students and have conversations with them to get them ready for the college process.

For younger students, our guidance includes encouraging them to take advantage of the rigors of our curriculum, build strong relationships with their teachers (who will recommend them to college), explore the richness of our cocurriculars, and contribute to a safe and healthy campus environment. We invite 9th and 10th graders to our annual college fair — they’ll have a chance to ask college representatives about pre-college and summer programs, get advice on how to achieve their career interests, and learn about graduate and professional school preparation. For these students, the goal isn’t to make a list of colleges, but to begin to find a path toward their dreams and aspirations. And we are always available to answer questions these students and their family members have about the college process.

NMH is a very special place, with very special people, including our college counselors. We are eager to get to know our students — both inside and outside of the classroom — and help prepare them for what awaits them after NMH.
