Music

Picture of chorus performance at co-ed boarding high school in MA

Northfield Mount Hermon's music program is broad enough to accommodate everyone from accomplished recitalists to students who have yet to play their first note.

Our music courses range from basic classes in music appreciation to AP Music Theory and Harmony. We offer a compelling mix of topics and instruments, too. You can study the history of jazz or compare Bach and Beethoven. You can learn how to use a mixing board, improve your vocal techniques, or pick up piano, cello, or French horn. Some courses involve performing; in others you'll write papers. In all of them, you'll think, discuss, and listen, listen, listen.

Of course, performance is central to music, which is why we have such a wide range of ensemble groups. At the beginner levels they focus on having fun learning together. At advanced levels, you'll work with peers as devoted as you while you reenergize your own commitment and challenge yourself to ever-higher achievement. Our ensemble groups perform on campus and around the world, traveling to concerts in Russia, Germany, Korea, China, and Japan. They win many awards, and have even been heard on the National Public Radio show "From the Top" in a live taping held right here on campus. The annual Christmas Vespers and Sacred Concert are long-standing NMH traditions.

Our music faculty is second to none among New England boarding schools. The faculty includes active composers or performers who also offer a wide variety of private study options.

So, whether you make music with your voice or your instrument, if you're just starting out or already a virtuoso, you'll find our program welcoming and remarkable. It will instill a love of music in you and develop your best ability to make it.
