Nurses are available 24/7 to see students without appointments. During the weekdays, Dr. Rourke and Tiffany Doyle, NP, are available to see students with appointments and those with urgent needs.

We discourage students from bringing over-the-counter medications to school. However, if families choose to send students to school with medications, it is important to review with them how to take and store the medications safely. Please review our policy as listed in the NMH Rules and Policies Handbook for additional details.

The Health and Wellness Center is stocked with most over-the-counter medications that your student may need, and will dispense single doses as appropriate.

Nurses are readily available to answer any questions.

All prescriptions should be updated at the Health and Wellness Center with nursing, who can confirm if the medication can be kept in the student's room or at the Health and Wellness Center. If the medication can be kept in the student's room, nursing will confirm that the student understands how to take and store the medication correctly.

All psychotropic medications (antidepressants, anxiolytics, ADD/ADHD medications, etc.) and controlled substances such as pain medications must be brought to the Health and Wellness Center, where it will be held and dispensed on a daily basis.

Any packages received in the NMH mailroom with pharmacy packaging or packages that are suspected of containing pills or medication are sent to the O’Connor Health and Wellness Center. The student whose name is on the package is notified that a package is at the nurses’ station. The student is asked to open the package in the presence of a nurse to review the contents. Any over-the-counter supplements, vitamins, or prescription medications are held by nursing and the parents are emailed. Once the parents give written consent for the student to have the medication, nursing will review its proper use and safe storage. If parents do not consent within a week’s time, the item(s) will be destroyed.

Day students are seen for urgent same-day needs. Chronic issues should be handled by a student’s primary care physician.

If your student needs labs done while at school, our nurses draw them and they are sent to Baystate Reference Lab to be processed.

Routine and urgent x-rays are done at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. The Health and Wellness Center staff will arrange transportation for your student.

Most of our consulting providers are in the Greenfield area, but occasionally we use providers in the Northampton, Amherst, and Springfield areas. Please contact Tonya Talbot to schedule an appointment with a specialist.

We encourage our students to communicate with their parents when they are seen. In the event of a major illness or an acute event, parents are notified. Families can also call the nurse on duty at any time, day or night, to get an update on their student.

Yes. Our medical providers work closely with NMH's certified athletic trainers. Our athletic trainers are available to see students in the Trainer's Room where they treat the vast majority of sports related injuries. In addition, we work with Baystate Sports Medicine for more serious injuries.
