The Northfield Mount Hermon boys' basketball team plays in the prestigious New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) AAA, considered the premier prep conference in the nation.
NMH has earned the title of being the best combination of academics and basketball in the United States. Over the past 15 years, NMH has sent 45 players to the Ivy League, which is more than 3x the amount of any other program in the World. In 2021-2022, NMH basketball alums are playing at the University of Kentucky, Northwestern University, Dartmouth College, University of Texas, 2 at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Hawaii, Washington State University, College of Charleston, University of Kansas, 2 at Elon University, 2 at Brown University, Yale University, the University of Notre Dame, 2 at Cornell University, Columbia University, and 3 at Harvard University. The 2013 NMH National Championship team has made the case to be considered the best in academics and basketball in high school history, with players matriculating to Stanford University, 2 to Dartmouth College, Boston College, George Washington University, Tulane University, UMBC, WPI, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, 2 to Yale University, and Harvard University. This team was inducted into the NMH Athletics Hall of Fame in May, 2019.
NMH basketball has been ranked among the top ten teams in the country for the past 18 years and the top five teams in the country for the past 15 years. NMH has participated in 11 consecutive National Championship tournaments making it to the Final Four 7 times, the National Championship game 4 times and won the National Championship in 2013. NMH has advanced to the New England Championship game 5 times in the past 8 years winning the New England title in 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2019. NMH has averaged over 28 wins per season since 2012.
NMH's head coach is Mike Shelton, who is entering his first year at the helm of the storied program. Shelton comes to NMH with an overall coaching record of 125-66. He was named the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Coach of the Year in 2015 and won the 2015 and 2016 NEPSAC Class A Championships while coaching at Williston Northampton School. Most recently, Shelton was the head coach at The Governor's Academy, where his teams compiled a 39-19 Independent School League (ISL) conference record and finished tied for 2nd (out of 16 teams) in 2020 for the first time in over a decade.
