Northfield Mount Hermon is a member of numerous athletics associations and leagues, on the school and individual team level.

New England Preparatory School Athletic Council

Founded in 1942, the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council is the governing organization for athletics programs in more than 185 accredited independent schools across New England, along with several associate members in the Mid-Atlantic. NEPSAC sanctions championships and honors athletes and coaches across numerous sports, provides guidance for interscholastic athletics, and oversees sports played by its member schools.

Mount Hermon School claimed its first NEPSAC championship in 1948, on the cross country course.

Eight Schools Association

While the Eight Schools Association (comprising Northfield Mount Hermon, Deerfield Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, Phillips Exeter Academy, Choate Rosemary Hall, The Hotchkiss School, St. Paul’s School, and Lawrenceville School) is not an official athletics league, its members prioritize competition with other member schools whenever feasible.

For NMH, this includes fall season “all sport” days against Andover, Exeter, St. Paul’s, Choate, and Hotchkiss. In addition, almost every team competes against Deerfield, but on different days, given the close proximity of the schools.

Winter and spring seasons do not provide opportunity for all-sports days, but contests with other ESA schools are prioritized in scheduling. Other ESA competitions take place during the regular season, including the New England 8 girls’ basketball tournament.

Mount Institute Ski League

The Mount Institute Ski League is composed of independent and public schools from Massachusetts and Connecticut. NMH’s boys' and girls' Alpine ski teams compete in the MISL, which is based at the Berkshire East Mountain Resort, during the regular season.

New England Scholastic Lacrosse League

The NMH boys’ lacrosse team is a member of the New England Scholastic Lacrosse League. Teams play a round-robin league schedule, with the top four teams competing in a tournament at the end of the season. NESLL also sponsors all-league recognition. In addition to NMH, the league includes Austin Preparatory School, Cushing Academy, Dexter Southfield School, Portsmouth Abbey School, Pingree School, and Phillips Exeter Academy.

Women's Western New England Prep School Soccer Association

The NMH girls’ soccer team is a member of the Women's Western New England Prep School Soccer Association, comprising independent schools from western Massachusetts, western Connecticut, and New York. WWNEPSSA provides priority scheduling among its teams, ranks teams in each of four divisions, and sponsors all-league contests and recognition.

Western New England Prep School Girls Softball Association

The NMH softball team is a member of the Western New England Prep School Girls Softball Association, comprising independent schools in western Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire. The association provides guaranteed scheduling and the opportunity to qualify for a post-season tournament. (NEPSAC does not sponsor a softball tournament in the spring.) WNEPSGA also sponsors an all-league contest and all-league recognition.

National Prep Wrestling Championships

NMH’s boys' and girls' wrestling teams culminate their seasons at the National Prep Wrestling Tournaments, hosted at Lehigh University. The top six placewinners in each weight class at the NEPSAC tournament qualify for National Preps. This tournament, founded in 1935, serves as the national championship event for private schools, drawing more than 120 teams from across the country.
