Spectator Expectations

Competitions are integral to the learning environment, providing opportunities for student-athletes and supporters alike to embrace the values of character and integrity.

Northfield Mount Hermon expects of its spectators the same things we expect of our scholar-athlete-citizens and our competitors: Be your best self, respect the sport, and respect others. Cheer loudly and heartily, channel your emotions in a constructive way, and respect the adults who are doing their best to coach and officiate.

NMH’s athletics code of conduct is designed to encourage a positive, enjoyable environment and applies to spectators, for both the home and visiting teams.

Any person who violates these expectations will be escorted from the event and may lose the opportunity to attend future contests or be present on the NMH campus. A representative of the NMH athletics leadership team will be available at every contest; please bring any concerns or compliments to them.

  • Respectful behavior and language is expected before, during, and after athletics contests, at and away from the competition site. This applies to public forums and to social media sites.

  • Athletes, coaches, and fans are all expected to respect the efforts and the decisions of the officials.

  • Positive cheering works. There is zero tolerance for booing, taunting, or foul or obscene gestures or language, including deriding a student-athlete, another fan, or a game official.

  • Signs with profane, abusive, or disrespectful language or symbols are explicitly prohibited.

  • Interference with the progress of the game (including throwing objects onto the competition surface) is prohibited.

  • Fans should remain in designated areas and not enter the playing area before, during, or after the game.

  • Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on campus, even for personal use (e.g., cans in koozies or cups) is prohibited.

  • Vehicles must be parked in designated areas and may not block access to roads, fire lanes, or other critical areas. Vehicles in violation may be ticketed or towed, at the owner’s expense.

  • Any on-campus fan-related event or gathering, before or after the game (including tailgates), must receive approval from the NMH athletics department in advance. Advance planning and communication is required to ensure a good experience for all. Organizers should email Rafaela Calicchio, director of auxiliary services, at least three days in advance. The event must have a point person connected to the NMH community (e.g., a parent, employee, alum) who will assume responsibility for setup and cleanup, including requests for tables, chairs, and other items. This person also assumes financial responsibility for any damages incurred as a result of the event.

  • Northfield Mount Hermon is a tobacco-free campus, including e-cigarettes. Visitors are expected to observe the no-smoking regulation in and around athletics venues.
