Admissions Application Checklist

1. Application

Applicants for the 2026-27 academic year may use either the Standard Application Online or the Gateway to Prep Schools application.

The Standard Application Online is now accepting applications for Fall of 2026. The Gateway application for Fall 2026 will close on June 14, 2026, and will reopen around July 1, 2026, for students applying for the 2027 academic year.

 

2. Standardized Test Requirements

This year, a general admission test (SSAT, ISEE, ACT, PSAT, or SAT) is optional. If a student submits a test score that strengthens their application, we will consider it in our decision. Scores that do not strengthen an application will not be taken into account. Since Northfield Mount Hermon is test-optional, we do not provide any fee waivers for testing.

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit score reports from any of the following English proficiency tests: 

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet-Based (iBT) or Home Edition

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic)

• Duolingo English Test (DET) 

NMH may waive the testing requirement if you completed your last two academic years at a school where English is the primary language of instruction.

The following minimum scores are strongly recommended for non-native English speakers: 

• Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or TOEFL Home Edition: 100 (prior to Jan. 21, 2026) or 5.5

• Duolingo English test: 125

• IELTS Academic: 7 overall band score

 

3. Recommendations 

English and math teacher recommendations must be from your current instructors.

 

4. Interview

All students are required to have an interview. To schedule an interview, please call the admission office at 413-498-3227.

International applicants: Prospective students from countries where Northfield Mount Hermon historically has received large numbers of applications, and English is not the students native language, are required to complete an interview with our partner organization, InitialView.

Currently, NMH requires applicants from the People's Republic of China and South Korea to use this interview service.

InitialView records a student’s live, unscripted interview and sends us a copy, along with a sample of the student’s writing. NMH admission counselors review and evaluate the interview and writing sample.

Please contact InitialView directly to arrange an appointment at least two weeks before NMH’s Jan. 15, 2025, application deadline.

 

5. Additional Information

If you have additional information to add to your application (recommendations, updated transcripts, or our supplement), please submit it in the SchoolAdmin parent portal. 

In addition to the requirements above, supplementary material for athletes and visual and performing artists may be submitted; however, it is optional. We do not accept original artwork, CDs, or DVDs. Please email a link to media@nmhschool.org, with a brief description of the submission in the subject line.

 

6. Applying for Need-based Scholarship Aid

Families who need financial support to allow their student to attend NMH should submit an application for a need-based scholarship.
