March Break Trips
Arts and Culture in Japan
On our March break program in Japan, you’ll spend 10 days immersed in Japanese culture through the study and practice of traditional forms of visual art.
You’ll investigate the impact of various art-making practices in historical and modern Japan and their relationship to the development of Japan’s culture. And you’ll have opportunities to take part in these traditional crafts, such as washi-making and roketsu dyeing, through art-making excursions. In addition, you’ll be introduced to the history of Japan by visiting cultural and religious sites, including the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shinto shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and museum collections in Kyoto and Osaka.
Known as the cultural epicenter of Japan, Kyoto is home to sites of worship that have been preserved and refined over the past 1,200 years. Many important and sacred practices originated in Kyoto and still influence the day-to-day lives of Japanese people.
Osaka is a modern cosmopolitan city, known as the most multicultural in Japan. During your visit, you’ll walk through its neighborhoods and the winding streets, where the old meets the new. At the end of this program, you will have gained an in-depth appreciation of art forms, Japanese culture, and the beauty of historical and modern Japan.
