Dean of Faculty's Welcome

Welcome to Northfield Mount Hermon. It gives me great pleasure, as assistant head of school for academic programs and dean of faculty, to introduce you to our innovative, distinctive NMH experience led by our outstanding faculty. I’m proud to work with colleagues who are versatile, creative, committed to caring for students, and who believe they can affect change. Together, we challenge and inspire our students to be the best version of themselves.

Our faculty respect and promote hard work and collaboration. We educate the head, heart, and hands of each student, and we lead by example, playing many roles at NMH — as coaches, advisors, and mentors — in addition to teaching. We are a diverse group of educators who love what we do and are committed to our own continued learning.

Our goal is simple: to deliver excellence as we support the school’s mission to empower students to act with humanity and purpose so they can change the world. We help students achieve mastery of subject-specific skills and content, think critically and creatively, and become effective communicators. We expect them to set lofty goals, take risks, and engage with both academic material and one another. We guide them toward cultural understanding, helping them develop integrity, empathy, and a concern for social justice.

COVID-19 has changed the way we think about education. It has not changed our excellent program and the uniqueness of the NMH experience. We continue to challenge our students academically, offer them strong community connections, and attend to their social-emotional learning.

We are flexible and nimble and we adapt to make sure all our students, wherever they are, remain part of a vibrant, engaging, and grounding community. We offer a rigorous, exciting curriculum with advanced courses in all disciplines. Our College-Model Academic Program (CMAP) is based on a semester schedule, with 70-minute classes that allow students to develop deeper knowledge and stronger skills. Our NMH Lab Program supports remote learning through a project-based, collaborative curriculum for students who cannot be on campus this fall. No matter whether students are on campus or learning remotely, they take six full-credit classes a year. We take a holistic approach and offer students opportunities to develop their athletic and artistic potential and build connections. We encourage students to participate in affinity groups, clubs, and organizations, and we offer a comprehensive social-emotional program to support and promote a healthy experience in our community.

NMH supports the whole student through our Partnership of 12, which is the constellation of adults who work with each student throughout the year, focusing on personal growth and the pursuit of excellence. The partnership ties into our residential-life and advising systems, where students learn life skills and become reliable community members. Advisors partner with students and families to meet them where they are. They help students take ownership of the learning process and support them in their journey. Because NMH is home to students and teachers from around the U.S. and the world, our students become global citizens, embracing a multicultural approach and learning how to be part of an inclusive community.

As someone who deeply values education, I am proud of who we are at NMH, and of how well we live out our mission. We are a school where students can learn about themselves and the world around them, and become effective agents of change.
