Head of School Charles A. Tierney III has been a "man for all seasons" since his arrival in 1998: history teacher, coach, dorm advisor, dean, accreditation coordinator, assistant head of school, plant facilities director, communications director, and interim head of school. From 2014 to 2016, he led the Tatnall School in Wilmington, Delaware, serving as head. Charlie also has been director of studies at St. Stephen’s School in Rome, and has taught at Choate Rosemary Hall and the Berkshire School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College and a master’s in educational leadership and administration from Teachers College of Columbia University while he was a year-long Klingenstein Fellow.
Dean of Students Nicole Hager P’17 came to NMH in 2003 from Deerfield Academy, where she served as associate dean of admission, coordinator of multicultural education, associate dean of students, American literature teacher, girls’ varsity basketball coach, and a college counselor. At NMH, she has taught ninth-grade writing and 10th-grade diversity and social justice, and she coached the girls’ varsity basketball team for nine years. She lives with her partner and family and five senior girls in Oaknoll dormitory. Nicole spent two years in the Dartmouth College admissions office and one year as the assistant coach of the University of Vermont women’s basketball team. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College.
Dean of Faculty Bea Garcia P’09 began mentoring educators years ago, when she was part of a teacher-training program for English as a Foreign Language instructors in her home country, Uruguay. After moving to the United States, she taught Spanish for two years at Deerfield Academy, then came to NMH in 2003 to teach in the world languages department. She has taught Spanish, Diversity and Social Justice, and has led language programs abroad. She also served as department chair from 2006 until taking on the assistant dean of faculty role in 2014. After four years as assistant dean, she assumed the dean of faculty position in 2018. She earned a master’s degree from Spain’s Universidad de Jaén in 2011.
Dean of Enrollment Claude Anderson joined NMH in 2008 after heading the admission and financial aid office at Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, for 13 years. Previously, he served as dean of students, associate director of admissions, and a coach at several boarding and day schools. He chairs the Admission Training Institute for the SSAT. He holds a bachelor's degree from Millersville University, a master's from Western New Mexico University, and a master's in education from Temple University.
Chief Advancement Officer Allyson Goodwin '83, P’12, ’14, a four-year senior who spent equal time on both campuses, came to work at NMH for the second time in 2006 and completed the most successful and largest campaign in the school’s history in 2010. She began her career in alumni and parent relations and annual giving at NMH from 1987 to 1992 while also serving as a dorm parent and a class advisor. Later Allyson directed the annual fund at Colby-Sawyer College and the regional campaign program at Colby College. After Colby, she was the director of development for the Montshire Museum, where she ran two campaigns. Allyson is a graduate of Colby College with a degree in American studies and creative writing. She has taught social justice and diversity at NMH and has served as a trustee of the Bement School and as president of the Upper Valley Planned Giving Council.
Chief Financial Officer James R. Pugh is serving in this role for the remainder of the 2018–19 academic year. He was previously CFO at The Hill School and Brooks School. Jim holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College, an M.A. in East Asian studies from Harvard University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota.
Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice Martha Neubert joined the NMH faculty in 2005 after moving from Waynflete School in Portland, Maine. Martha has been teaching history in independent schools for 18 years. In 2016, she started in a new position as director the Office of Multicultural Affairs, which promotes an inclusive campus culture through initiatives that explicitly align with the school's mission to empower students to “act with humanity and purpose.” A deep understanding of NMH is one of her strengths, and Martha, in addition to teaching, has served as a dorm parent, an advisor, a coach, an affinity group advisor, and a contributor to school initiatives related to diversity and social justice. Martha holds a bachelor’s degree from Bates College, and an M.A.T. from Smith College.
Dean of Global, Experiential, and Community Engagement Angela Yang-Handy joined NMH in 2014 after serving as managing director of an after- school tutorial franchise in Manila, Philippines. While Angela has studied and worked in international education for most of her adult life, she has also coordinated programs in service-learning, multicultural student affairs, admissions, residential life, and academic advising. She has worked as a teacher and administrator at Clark University, Landmark College, Keene State College, and University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in addition to working with other educational institutions and community-based programs in the U.S. and abroad.
Angela holds a doctorate in education policy and leadership from UMass–Amherst, an M.A. and B.A. in international development and social change from Clark University, and a graduate certificate from UMass–Amherst in advanced feminist studies. In her current role, she directs both the Global Engagement Office and the Center for Learning Through Action. She is responsible for coordinating the collaborative efforts of NMH’s experiential programming in global engagement, social entrepreneurship, service-learning, the school farm, student work program, the outdoor program, and sustainability education.
Director of Communications Sharon Lindale P’17, ’20 served as Associate Director in NMH's communications department for seven years before being named director in 2018. She came to NMH in 2000, working first as a production assistant and later as production manager. Sharon earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and photography from NYU and an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art.
Interim Athletic Director Greg Leeds P’16, ’18, ’22 has been a mathematics teacher, alpine ski coach, and student advisor at NMH since 1996, and the director of NMH Summer Session since 2005. He has coached the NMH alpine ski team to three New England alpine skiing championship titles and 16 Mount Institute Ski League championship titles since 1997. Greg is a former coach of the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams, and a recipient of the NMH Housen Coaching Award for excellence in coaching. A certified soccer and skiing official, Greg is co-president of the Mount Institute Ski League. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Williams College and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Dartmouth College.
Director of College Counseling Peter Jenkins has served NMH for more than a quarter-century. In his current position, he guides students through the complex process of selecting, and gaining admission to, some of the world’s finest colleges.
His roles as English teacher and crew coach help Jenkins know current students well as individuals in and out of the classroom. This makes it easier to help students find the colleges that fit them best. He has taught nearly every English course in the NMH curriculum, from Freshman Humanities to AP Literature to Satire and Film. Jenkins earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. Both were in English and American literature.
