Northfield Mount Hermon is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory school, located in western Massachusetts, with approximately 650 boarding and day students in grades 9 through 12, and a postgraduate year.

NMH employs approximately 130 people in teaching and administrative faculty positions, and more than 210 in staff positions. Some jobs are year-round; others offer an academic-year schedule or are part-time. Locksmith/Carpenter

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks an experienced, motivated individual to perform locksmith and carpentry duties for all school owned buildings on and off campus. The qualified applicant will install, maintain and repair campus locks and door hardware and work in conjunction with the carpenters on various tasks and projects. 

The successful applicant will have a High School diploma or its equivalent with a minimum of 3-5 years experience as a locksmith. Applicants must have a good working knowledge of Massachusetts building code and have the  ability to read and build from design and CAD drawings. A CRL License or greater is preferred. Additional qualifications include proficiency with computers and system programming, the ability to operate machinery and power tools, the ability to work collaboratively with a team, as well as being motivated, organized and capable of working independently. A valid driver’s license is required. Occasional overtime and availability for call in work is required.

Infant/Toddler Teacher

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks a caring individual to work with teachers and the Director in providing the highest quality infant/toddler care, and in carrying out the philosophy of the Bolger Center for Early Childhood Education, and in ensuring smooth operations of all aspects of the Early Childhood Education Center.

The successful applicant will have a good understanding of developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood education as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC); previous experience, including the ability to work closely with others in a team teaching environment. Candidates must possess a Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care Infant/Toddler Teacher Certification and must be certified in CPR and Pediatric First Aid (or willing to become certified).  Additional qualifications include the ability to work collaboratively with a team, as well as being a self-starter capable of working independently. Director of Plant Facilities and Grounds

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks an energetic, qualified individual to function as the chief facilities manager for the school with responsibility for broad policy and management oversight of the school’s Plant/Facilities organization.  Responsibilities include the planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling of all plant functions inclusive of facilities planning, construction/renovation financial administration, human resource management, and basic operations such as the systematic inspection, planning, and accomplishing of repairs to facilities, equipment and grounds;  facilities and grounds maintenance; operation and maintenance of the school’s utility and infrastructure systems; construction and renovation services; housekeeping, laundry and mail services.

The successful applicant will have a Bachelor degree in engineering or related field with 6 years of  progressively responsible experience in facility operation and management in which at least 3 years have been in a supervisory capacity. Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of physical plant operation, maintenance and repair; planning, scheduling, supervision and administration, record keeping and report writing. Additional qualifications include superior written and oral communication skills are required as well as essential computer literacy, including the ability to effectively utilize work order and office management systems. A valid driver’s license is required. Some weekend and evening work required. Must have the ability to respond promptly to campus as needed.

Business Process Support Specialist

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks an energetic, qualified individual to function as the Business Process Support Specialist. This position collaborates with constituencies across campus to research, analyze, and recommend improvements to the school’s business processes and technology in order to improve overall organization performance. Works closely with IT programmers, systems analysts, and support staff to develop project plans, communicate changes, and provide training and support to impacted users.

The successful applicant will have a Bachelor degree or equivalent with 5 years of relevant  experience in a technical environment. Comprehensive knowledge of database architecture, design and development practices, implementation and deployment strategies, and data reporting methods preferred. Additional qualifications include outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills. Experience with technology at an academic institution and Blackbaud software experience is strongly preferred.

Sous Chef

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks an energetic sous chef  to assist in the production of food for a residential dining community. This position works with the Executive Chef to plan, organize and carry-out the production of food services for a residential educational community. Responsibilities include preparing/assisting in the preparation of meals, special functions, catering and menu writing.  The sous chef oversees kitchen operations and staff in the absence of the Executive Chef and contributes to food service menus and operational development and efficiency.

 The successful applicant will have a high school diploma or culinary school equivalent; minimum 3 years in culinary leadership position.  Supervisory experience and previous experience working in an institutional/restaurant environment required. ServSafe Food Safety Certification is required. Additional qualifications include outstanding organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team, as well as being a self-starter capable of working independently.  NMH dining services staff work closely with our students, the ability to work effectively with and instruct adolescents in the preparation and service of meals is essential. Must be able to work nights, weekends and overtime.

Assistant Advisor Internship, Upward Bound

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks an intern to help support the Academic Advisors in the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound is a college preparation program for low­ income and first generation college bound youth. The Assistant Advisor will assist in all aspects of the program including but not limited to project development, recruitment, coordinating trips and events, fundraising, maintain social media for the program and work as office manager during the Upward Bound Summer Academy. 

The successful applicant will have an Associates degree; experience working with high school aged youth preferred. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to process and hold confidential information. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google applications, and social media is desired. Additional qualifications include the ability to work collaboratively with a team, as well as being a self-starter capable of working independently. This position requires a valid drivers license, safe driving record and reliable transportation.

Faculty Openings

Athletic Director

The Director of Athletics is responsible for leadership, development, oversight and evaluation of the school’s competitive interscholastic athletic programs, physical fitness activities and outdoor education program, including facilities management and development in support of the programs.  The Director of Athletics is also responsible for articulating, stewarding, and interpreting a comprehensive vision for NMH Athletics, ensuring that its activities are consistent with and supportive of the school’s mission to educate the head, heart, and hand, and promote the important values of student well-being, physical fitness, development of healthy habits, integrity, leadership, and teamwork.  

The successful applicant will have a  Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree in relevant field preferred and substantial experience in athletics as both a head coach and athletic administrator, at either the secondary school level or higher education.  Candidates must have excellent organizational and decision-making skills and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. U Penn Residency Program

The University of Pennsylvania's Penn Residency Master's in Teaching program is a groundbreaking collaboration between the Penn Graduate School of Education and a consortium of the nation's leading Boarding Schools. With an innovative and comprehensive curriculum designed specifically for the boarding schools' unique setting, the program provides aspiring teachers an opportunity to receive a master's degree in education in concert with the exceptional fellowship programs offered by participating schools.

Leadership Positions

Chief Advancement Officer

Northfield Mount Hermon (“NMH”) — located in the Pioneer
Valley of Western Massachusetts — seeks a chief advancement officer (“CAO”). The CAO will play a critical role
in sustaining NMH’s distinction among pre-eminent American
independent boarding schools as NMH prepares for the most ambitious campaign in its history.

The CAO is responsible for the oversight and management of the school’s advancement operation, including annual fundraising; alumni, donor and parent relations; communications; and major and planned gifts. The CAO reports directly to the head of school, while working closely with the senior leadership team and the board of trustees.
The CAO supervises seven direct reports: senior director of advancement, director of advancement communications, NMH fund director, director of parent engagement and
special programs, director of major and planned gifts, the director of alumni and donor relations and office manager. NMH’s advancement operation comprises 27 FTEs as well
as student workers who fulfill their four-hour-per week WorkJob obligations there.

Appointment is on a 12-month basis. NMH offers competitive wages and a generous benefit package that includes retirement, health, and life insurance plans and paid
vacation, holiday, and sick leaves. The school is unusual in providing tuition remission to the admitted children of all employees.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished advancement professional, with a proven record of successful fundraising, including experience with planning and directing
capital campaigns, as well as lead and major gift solicitation. Candidates must demonstrate at least fifteen years of progressively responsible and successful development experience, including prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors, as well as substantial experience with the administration and management of a large staff in a high-affinity institution with a culture of excellence. A bachelor’s degree in an arts-and-sciences discipline is required, with an advanced degree preferred. Other qualifications include:
• Knowledge of best practices in academic advancement, and the ability to apply such practices in innovative ways.
• Cross-cultural competency equipped to engage the notably diverse, international community of NMH students, alumni and parents.
• An appreciation of the transformative impact of independent boarding schools,and the ability to advocate effectively for NMH to be a top philanthropic priority for its community members.

• A systems orientation and the aptitude for and willingness to use technology and social media to foster community building and to facilitate online fundraising.
• Experience in a close-knit residential academic setting.
