The NMH community recognized the hard work and academic excellence of 23 seniors during the morning meeting at Memorial Chapel on April 7, when the spring inductees to the Cum Laude Society were announced. They join 16 of their classmates who were named to the society in the fall. Together, these seniors represent the top 20% of their graduating class.

Cum Laude, the independent school national honor society, is the secondary school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa. A committee of NMH faculty awards Cum Laude honors to seniors whose academic achievements and integrity demonstrate the society's commitment to the principles of moral excellence (areté), justice (diké), and honor (timé) throughout their academic career.

In addition to their academic excellence, the students nominated for Cum Laude demonstrate well-rounded academic success in a variety of disciplines, said Michael Clark, an English teacher and Cum Laude faculty committee secretary.

“In today's world of increasing hyper-specialization, many students identify themselves through a fixed and restrictive lens: ‘I'm a STEM person,’ or ‘I'm a humanities person,’ or ‘I'm an arts person,’” Clark said. “To be inducted in Cum Laude, a student cannot specialize in only one academic subject; they must be a broad and accomplished learner in all disciplines.”

The spring 2025 Cum Laude inductees are:

  • Mohammed Al Salhi

Students will receive a certificate and pin, and their names will be added to the official membership list of the NMH chapter of Cum Laude, which began in 1929.

“More than anything else, I'm grateful for all the lasting lessons I’ve learned along the way,” said inductee Yoona Jung, reflecting on her academic career at NMH.

“It's certainly an honor to be recognized for Cum Laude,” fellow inductee Finn Johnston said. “Whether academically centered or not, receiving any sort of recognition for your dedication always feels great."
