Wrestler Aiden Hanning '22 wins National Championship
March 2, 2022 — Congratulations to NMH wrestler Aiden Hanning ’22 for his performance in the National Preps Wrestling Tournament in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Feb. 25–26.
Hanning, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, went unbeaten to earn All-American honors and finish in first place in his weight class to become a National Champion.
Hanning, a three-time All-American who has committed to Cornell University, was the only New England Prep School wrestler in the finals and champion.
Here’s a summary of Hanning’s performance:
In Round of 32, he pins Riley McClure from the Boys' Latin School of Maryland in 1:23.
In Round of 16, he pins William Vandiver from the Episcopal Academy in 0:55.
In the quarterfinals, he pins #8 Oliver Jones from Norfolk Academy in 1:20.
In the semifinals, he wins by decision 6-2 over #4 Wolfgang Frable from Wyoming Seminary.
In the finals, Hanning pins #2 John Dusza from St. Benedict's Preparatory School in 5:12
Several other NMH wrestlers had notable performances at the tournament, and as a team, NMH placed 8th nationally.
Army Westpoint commit #5 David Barrett ’23 became a two-time Prep All-American, taking fifth place. Barrett beat out #4 Aiden Bowers from Christian Brothers High School by a technical fall 19-5 in the fifth-place round match.
NYU commit #11 Nicky Bell ’22, took sixth, becoming a Prep All-American. Bell pinned #6 Bryce Phillips from Mount St. Joseph Academy in the Round of 16 in the Sudden Victory (OT) Round. He also beat #10 Andrew Lavayen from St. Stephen’s and St.Agnes Private Day School 5-2 in the Round of 4.
And #3 Rowan MacIntosh ’25 became NMH’s first Prep All-American, taking second in the women’s division at the National Preps Tournament. MacIntosh started by pinning #6 Elizabeth Duda from the Lawrenceville School in 2:33. She then pinned #2 Maya Douge from Middlesex School in 1:01 in the semifinals round.
