Reaching New Heights: Efe Iyahen ’27 Builds on Record-Breaking Season

After breaking a 26-year-old school high jump record last spring, Efe Iyahen ’27 entered this season with even bigger goals in mind.

The record-breaking jump came at the New England Championships, where he not only set a new NMH mark, but also broke the meet record previously held by another NMH athlete.

“From my freshman year, it was my goal to break it, though it seemed almost impossible at the time,” Iyahen said. “I was stuck at 6’6” for most of the season, but finally breaking 6’9” at New Englands meant a lot.”

Now, Iyahen is focused on continuing to climb the national rankings while helping lead the NMH track and field team as a captain.

“Getting the record was very nice, but I plan on going even higher,” he said. “I’m also probably going to do track in college, so continuing to improve and be competitive keeps me motivated.”

According to head coach Tabatha Collins, Iyahen’s impact extends far beyond his performances in competition.

“Efe came into this season ready to step up as a leader on the team,” Collins said. “He has a quiet but commanding presence and has become someone younger athletes look up to.”

Collins believes Iyahen’s internal drive is what separates him as both an athlete and teammate.

“The motivation and drive come from within,” she said. “We will be hearing about Efe and his accomplishments far after he leaves this hill.”
