In the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of NMH Magazine, the page 96 “Parting Words” essay by veteran NMH faculty member and Middle East expert Ted Thornton is accompanied by an inaccurate map of the Middle East. The map shown does not demarcate Israel. Thornton did not choose to include a map with the article, nor was he involved in the design or editing process.
The mislabeled map was selected online by an outside design firm and not sufficiently reviewed internally. The magazine regrets the serious editing error, which confuses the editorial content by Thornton.
“Maps are political statements,” said Thornton, in response to the magazine’s error. “Maps of contested territories are the most political of all. The map that was chosen recognizes the existence of one side in the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians to the complete exclusion of the other. Nothing could be further from the position I have supported all along: a two-state solution to the conflict.”
