Q. How will I know if a computer is compatible with the NMH network?

A. The news is good: nearly all computers sold today, and within the past several years, will work well on the NMH network. NMH's network uses the same kinds of connections that home broadband networks do, so any computer designed for that environment should work well here.

NMH supplies high-speed network connections to its student houses, classrooms, and libraries. Computers must meet certain basic specifications to be compatible with this network. Most computers from electronics and office-supply stores will be sufficient.

We recommend a Windows XP-based computer with these minimum specifications:

  • 2GHz Intel, or AMD processor, 512 megabytes of RAM (1 gigabyte of RAM for Windows Vista)

  • 20 gigabyte hard drive, CD-ROM

  • 10/100-baseT Ethernet adapter

Machines with lesser specifications may also work on the network. Windows XP Home Edition works well at NMH.

Laptop or Desktop?

Choosing between bringing a laptop or desktop computer is purely a matter of choice and convenience.

We believe that technology should be available everywhere rather than needing to carry it around. Therefore, we have worked hard to eliminate any need for students to carry computers.

  • Computers are available in every classroom.

  • Laptop computers can be checked out for use in the library.

  • Each house has one or more public-use computers in the lobby.

  • There are multiple computer labs available for student use.

Students who come to NMH via airline may find it more convenient to bring a laptop. Students who live within driving distance of the school often choose to bring desktop computers.

Windows or Macintosh?

Most Macintosh computers with a 10/100-base T Ethernet adapter and a 500MHz PowerPC G3 processor generally work well on the network. Students can access their virtual desktops from either Windows-based or Macintosh computers.

While Macintosh computers work well in the NMH environment, some school-licensed software only runs on Windows computers.  Students using Macintosh computers must use this software in NMH computer labs, the library, and classrooms.

Wireless

Wireless networks exist in the library and classroom buildings. Students who bring wireless-equipped notebook computers can use them in these facilities once an NMH technician configures their wireless network connection.
