Coaches Corrigan, Partenheimer, and Gonzalez were in fine spirits on the way home from the Choate Invitational on Saturday, where they got their first glimpse of what to expect from this promising mixture of experienced seniors and underclass hopefuls – and liked what they saw.
Although no team scores were kept in this informal season opening event, NMH placed four runners in the top ten of the Novice Race, led by Jeffrey Simmonds ’12 in 3rd place out of 81 runners, 5 seconds ahead of teammate Nathaniel Rehm-Daley ’12 in 4th.
Four-year varsity runner Kevin Bravo ’10 led the NMH five in the Veterans Race, while three returning letter winners – Alex Gagnon ’10, Kevin Shen ’10, and co-captain Ryan Fluence ’10 – all cut significant seconds off their times from last year’s meet. Cam Kelleher ’11 (who was playing JV football last fall) showed varsity credentials in his first NMH race.
Next up is the Canterbury Invitational on Saturday, September 26th, where NMH will enter seven runners in a field of over 15 New England schools. Many thanks to the parents, family, and friends who were on hand at Choate, including cross-country alumnus Mohammed Hossain ’05, brother of Raihan Hossain ’13, who took 18th in the Novice Race, his first of many in an NMH singlet.

The bad news was that NMH was missing two of its top five varsity runners. The good news was that some younger team members took the opportunity and, well, ran with it. Jeffrey Simmonds ’12 and Nathaniel Rehm-Daly ’12, both sophomores moving from the track to the trails for the first time this season and both running in their first varsity race, cut significant seconds off of last week’s times in the Choate Invitational Novice Race to secure valuable points for the team. Fellow rookie Dan Hutner ’13 did not score, but his place allowed NMH to slip by Williston by two points into 15th place – one better than last year. Veteran Alex Gagnon ’10 was the top NMH finisher in 19:17, fast enough that his family missed him while stuck in traffic near the Big E. Thanks to co-captain Craig Turner ‘10’s family for their support and homemade cookies after the race.
Next up, the Andover Invitation on Saturday, October 3rd , where we hope to field a large group of varsity and JV runners in the two races.

The weather was ominous as a convoy of over 50 NMH runners, coaches, and managers headed east for the Andover Developmental Invitational, not knowing if any or all of their races might be cancelled by high winds, lightning, and heavy rains. As it turned out, weather conditions were almost ideal for running throughout the afternoon, and Andover’s gentle course produced lots of satisfied out of breath smiles for NMH veterans and novices alike.
All five varsity veterans ran season bests in the Blue Race (for runners with times under 19:00), highlighted by Luke Copeland ’11’s PR (19:21) in his first race of the season, stepping up for injured co-captain Craig Turner ’10. Alex Gagnon ’10 cemented his place as #2 in the varsity line-up with a PR of 18:54, continuing his improvement for the third straight week this season.
In the open White Race, the NMH youth movement took several giant steps forward, led by 3rd place medalist Jeffrey Simmonds ’12 with a PR of 19:02 and 7th place medalist Dan Hutner ’13 with a season best 19:16. Three other NMH runners came in under 20 minutes, including veteran Nayan Gosh ’11(19:38) in his first race of the season on limited training.
Parents’ Weekend take the varsity and JV teams to a quad meet at Loomis, along with Taft and Hotchkiss on Saturday, October 10. We hope for another supportive crowd before a well deserved long weekend.

NMH took Parents Weekend on the road on Saturday, as the cross-country teams got their first taste of head-to-head team competition in Division I of the New England prep school conference. Host Loomis placed five runners in the top ten to win all three dual races by comfortable margins, with Taft second, Hotchkiss third, and NMH fourth. As it turned out, the real excitement was the fight for third between NMH and Hotchkiss, which was ultimately decided by less than 0.1 second. All eight runners in the varsity race ran season best times, with the top three JV finishers qualifying for next week’s varsity race.
Sophomore sensation Jeffrey Simmonds ’12 –whose name has already been in lights in earlier highlights – put NMH in contention against Hotchkiss with another personal best, finishing just six seconds behind NMH lead dog Kevin Bravo ’10 and fourth in the dual scoring. Co-captains Ryan Fluence ’10, Craig Turner ’10, and veteran Alex Gagnon ’10 finished in a tight triad just ahead of the #4 Hotchkiss runner, setting the stage for a photo finish between frosh future star Dan Hutner ’13 and the #5 and #6 Hotchkiss runners to decide the meet. Hutner, who ran a season best by 27 seconds, bravely held off his #6 counterpart but was touched out at the finish by Hotchkiss #5’s late surge to fall short by 1 point.
Of course, no one knew this until hours later, as many NMHers scattered with their families for a much deserved long weekend, while coaches Corrigan, Partenheimer, and Gonzalez scratched out the figures for each of the six dual meets (3 varsity, 3 JV) in the vanishing twilight of the team bus back to NMH. To top it off, the Boston Globe reported a tie between NMH and Hotchkiss in the Sunday morning edition, sending us back to recheck the numbers.
On to Exeter next Saturday, and back for the Pie Race on Sunday, October 18. Come and cheer, or come and run (or both!). Hats off, as always , to the many NMH supporters who made the trip to Loomis, and for the post-race treats.

NMH runners headed off to Exeter with visions of more falling PRs on another flat and gentle course, only to meet cold temperatures and overwhelming opposition from last year’s #3 team in New England. When all 54 runners – 25 for NMH and 29 for Exeter – had crossed the finish in the combined boys’ race, the scores were 15-50 shutouts for Exeter at both the varsity and JV levels.
With five varsity runners sidelined by minor injuries and limited training after the long weekend, few NMHers managed to equal or improve upon last week’s times at Loomis. Nevertheless, the coaches found bright spots up and down the line-up. Kevin Bravo ’12 took a step toward regaining last year’s form with his first sub-18:00 time this season, and Dan Hutner ’12 held off another last ditch challenge from an Exeter opponent to finish 18th by 1 second. Most impressive, though, was the final 50-yard sprint by first-year harrier Oliver Dormody ‘11 to overtake his opponent at the tape, even though it changed nothing in the final standings.

Meanwhile, back on the friendly hills of Gill the next day, on a longer and harder course in more severe weather (albeit without Exonians), the Cross Country teams acquitted themselves rather well in the 119th Pie Race. Four-year veteran Kevin Bravo ’10 was the top student finisher, followed closely by first freshman Dan Hutner ’13 and first junior Cam Kelleher ’11; overall, the varsity and JV boys had ten of the 20 top places. Kudos also go to JV coach Grant Gonzalez, first faculty finisher, whose duel with Hutner at the finish will surely inspire future match-ups.
