NMH boys crew @ Lowell Invitational
Sunday, May 15th
Merrimac River, Lowell MA
distance: 2000 meters (1500 meters for boys novice)
conditions: light tail current, light crosswind, light chop, heavy rain
Racing summary:
A long day for the team and its supporters, but some very good racing sprinkled in between the downpours. The boys varsity had a strong race to put up the fourth fastest time out of sixteen crews, with the top four boats finishing within 5 seconds of each other. Deep thanks to our parents for taking good care of our food and drink needs on a very wet day - they kept our spirits up throughout!
Racing results:
B1 Varsity: Werblow, Benning, O'Donnell, Masselli, Hudgins, Breau, Savas, Ross-Martin, Monahan
Racing against some very good clubs and high school programs from eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, NMH shook off a surprise start that caught a number of crews off balance and settled into a powerful tempo going into the bridge at 700 meters. Coming out of the bridge, NMH were in a close race with five out of the six crews in the fastest flight, and had established a slight lead over three of them. Race leader Wayland began to move out strongly during the third 500 and BC High and Essex shifted into a higher gear as well. NMH were unable to maintain their advantage during this critical part of the race, but continued to keep good speed as Will Werblow urged his crew onward. With 500 meters to go, it was five boats in contact across the course and the crowd shook off the raindrops and began yelling with abandon as the crews battled for position. NMH finished with a good closing sprint, three seats down to Essex and perhaps six seats up on Bromfield, and came off the water knowing we had rowed well but wanting just a little bit more speed during crunch time. Two weeks till the NEIRA championship, and we are ready to find out just how fast we can be with top seed Andover coming to the Connecticut River this Saturday.
B2 Junior Varsity: Weis, Galowski, Prassus, Short, Dermont, Seltz, Maswood, Fletcher, Emery
Warming up on the way to the start line, NMH found out that our 1500m race had just been rescheduled for a 2000m race! Although the change in distance might have caused some anxiety among the guys, we didn't let it show in our race performance. Racing against a deep set of JV crews, NMH held our own with a good race, finishing fifth in a fast flight of six crews and posting the fifth fastest time in an eleven-boat field. Our finish time was only 20 seconds off the varsity's, so it's clear that these boys are moving the boat well right now. We have two more races this week against Hanover and Andover, and need to continue to race well in order to earn a spot in the NEIRA championship field.
Our novice and thirds boats also got in some good racing and finished with mixed results. The novice boat had a good row in the fastest flight, placing fifth but racing to a very good 5:14.9 time over the 1500m distance. There were 32 crews racing as novice Sunday, and NMH's time would have placed us thirteenth in the field. Our third boat was in a close battle with Brookline and Concord for the first thousand meters, but we were not able to maintain a straight course during the middle of the race. As race officials tried to provide directions to avoid collision, confusion over the instructions led to more steering difficulty and other crews began to oversteer as well. The end result was disqualification for NMH and the Concord crew, but no collisions fortunately - a race to learn a lot from for our newer oarsmen and coxswains.
