Results summary:
NMH brought two eights to our first race of the fall season, and we finished third and fourth in a 14-boat field. Hosts Essex and Andover HS were faster over the four-mile course, but we gained a lot of racing experience for our younger and newer oarsmen who were mixed into both boats along with our varsity kids. Senior coxswains Savannah Yates and Will Werblow provided excellent courses and commands for their crews, and we have a lot to build on as we move into the smaller boats for the next month. Our biggest lesson from this race - conditioning! Four miles is a long distance to hold a race pace, and although our boats were evenly matched, the boys in the Heat were able to sustain their leg drive better than their teammates in the Chase, resulting in the twenty-second margin between them. On the whole, it was a great first race for our team, and a wonderful potluck with the parents on the shore afterwards.

Results summary:
Every NMH boat brought home medals on a beautiful fall day in upstate New York. The boys varsity looked powerful and sharp, finishing second to an aggressive Saratoga crew that pressed NMH hard at the start. NMH did not fade under the pressure, and although they began to open up more distance on Saratoga in the second half of the race, the early advantage gained by Saratoga proved to be the difference in the race.
NMH's second varsity four also looked sharp, with great timing and quick catches into a strengthening headwind that would have disrupted the tempo of a less experienced crew. The boys of the Big Red earned bronze medals for a nice third-place finish among the JV crews, and sixth-place overall.

Results summary:
It was a remarkable day for the NMH crew Sunday, with every boat earning gold medal victories in their respective events and our small team earning enough points to place second overall to St. Johns Prep. The title of the race is perhaps an overstatement, since it is in its first year and many of our top fall competitors in the fours were racing at other head races around New England. We faced some good competition nonetheless and the boys proved up to the challenge today.
Michael O'Donnell moved into the stroke seat for the NMH varsity four, and paced his crew to a 10-second victory over a very good Brewster Academy crew who finished second in a big field at the Textile River Regatta last weekend. Junius Ross-Martin moved into the bow seat of the varsity this week, and provided crucial communication with his coxswain Savannah Yates as they responded effectively to several Brewster moves during the race. Alex Breau and Oliver Brown paced the junior varsity four to a strong 57-second victory in their event. Both boats looked smooth and powerful as they crossed the line, showing their readiness for the Head of the Charles regatta in two weeks. The novice four had an outstanding race, with Ryan Seltz setting a controlled tempo and Henry Weis steering a straight course down the length of Quinsigamond - I suspect that most of the crowd watching them row through the finish thought I misplaced them into the novice race since they looked so good going by. Ned Benning woke up early to race in the single, and earned a convincing victory over his Middlesex rival before doubling up to race with his varsity teammates later in the morning.

Results summary:
The conditions were difficult to race in on Saturday, but the NMH athletes were excited to measure their performance against some good competition, racing several good crews that we had seen before and several that we had not. Some boats handled the conditions better than others, and I was sorry to see that our varsity did not, struggling to clear our blades on the recovery and catching numerous small crabs during the first half of the race. We finished in 4th place, 6 seconds behind a second-place Brewster crew that we had defeated by ten seconds a week before and losing ground to a great Saratoga crew that we hope to race better against next Sunday at the Head of the Charles. NMH were not alone in their stuggles, with a previously undefeated crew from Wayland-Weston also finding the conditions difficult. Savannah Yates steered a great course, holding tight to the corners, and kept her crew in the game despite the conditions. A good race to learn from, I hope, and the guys will have a lot to work on Wednesday when we return to the Connecticut for our final practices before Boston.
Our second varsity four had a better row than the varsity, although still challenged by the wind and water. The Big Red finished seventh overall, gaining almost half a minute in speed on the varsity relative to last week, and was the second-fastest JV four in the large field of 22 crews from around New England and upstate New York.
Our parents were the biggest stars on the day, keeping the kids and coaches warm with great food and conversation. Thanks to all who made the trip on Parents Days!

Racing summary:
The NMH boys varsity crew raced to a fifth-place finish (16:55.6) in the Mens Youth 4s event at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday, rowing an outstanding race and knocking almost a minute off our previous best time on the fabled 3-mile course. Seventy-four high school and junior crews from around the United States and Canada were entered, and our boys (and one girl) from NMH showed that they are one of the elite fours in North America this fall.
Racing in the tenth position, NMH pressed the crews ahead of them hard for the first mile of the race. Junior Ned Benning and senior Michael O'Donnell set a powerful tempo through the Powerhouse stretch, while seniors Owen Monahan and Tenzin Masselli matched them stroke for stroke. Coxswain Savannah Yates took a fantastic line coming into the tight Weeks Bridge turn, deftly passing a good crew from Canisius with just a brief touch of the blades in a tight spot under the bridge, and then setting her sights to chase down a traditionally strong crew from Gunnery moving into the Anderson Bridge. Savannah kept her crew focused and driven throughout the race, and I have not seen a better course in ten years of coaching at the Charles. Observers at the final Elliot Bridge said the same thing about Savannah's course there, and with Ned bringing the rating up around the Belmont turn, NMH turned in the third fastest split for the final half mile. The boys erupted into cheers as they crossed the line, exhausted but extremely happy with their race and justly so.
For the first time, our second varsity four also raced in the event, and were moving very well through the first mile of the race. Senior coxswain Will Werblow had the right-of-way through the Western Avenue bridge, but a slower crew ahead cut into his course under the arches and the Big Red was forced to stop as oars became entangled. Will got his crew back on their line, and many observers were impressed with the great course that he took through the Weeks and Anderson bridges, expertly negotiating a knot of crews that were jammed up in the tight turns. Despite a good course and a solid effort from everyone, NMH's second varsity four placed 61st with a time of 18:43.0, perhaps demonstrating more clearly than anything else how challenging this race is from start to finish and how deep this field is from top to bottom. Seniors Alex Breau, Oliver Brown, Junius Ross-Martin, and sophomore Tucker Emery had no reason to hang their heads afterwards.
It was homecoming at NMH this weekend, and it certainly was a homecoming at the Charles, with former NMH rowers, coxswains, coaches, and parents all stopping by to share stories, hugs, congratulations, and food. Our parents and alums put on a great spread that was enjoyed by all - thank you to everyone who supported our team Sunday. We can't do any of this without you.

Racing summary:
The NMH boys crew completed its varsity racing season Sunday at the Head of the Fish regatta, a huge event that we have been unable to attend for several years. Racing at the back of a pack of 36 varsity eights from all over the Northeast and eastern Canada, NMH placed seventh with a clean and efficient race. Coxswain Will Werblow steered a good course, passing several crews enroute and avoiding any incidents despite a tight turn early in the race that tended to bunch up crews. Our time on the course was faster than we have ever raced here, showing good promise for our spring season and providing plenty of motivation for winter conditioning and strength-building.
Our junior varsity and novice fours joined forces to race a second varsity eight against 16 crews. Coxswain Henry Weis guided his crew well as they also passed several crews from the back of the pack, but our boys were only able to place 12th against strong competition.
Ned Benning raced his single in the Junior A (age 17-18) event and placed third out of 24 with a tenacious row in rough and unfamiliar water.
Angela O'Donnell knit nine bright orange pumpkin caps for the boys to wear in the varsity race (it was Halloween after all), and the boys took to them like candy, wearing them for the rest of the day and sparking admiring comments from other parents and athletes alike. We have been extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic group of chefs, organizers, seamstresses, chauffers, and photographers among our parents this year, and they came through once again with a tremendous feast on a cold raw day in upstate New York. Thank you to all!

Racing summary:
NMH brought our junior varsity to race in our final head race of the fall season. This was our first time racing in November, and as I pulled the trailer up to the regatta site, the cold temperatures and gray skies reminded me why we put the boats up for the winter each year. The gray skies were not reflected in the energy and enthusiasm of our junior varsity, who got off the bus ready to rig and eager to race. It's clear that these boys have made big strides in their conditioning and rowing skill, and it was exciting to see our boys leading the pack of 17 varsity and junior varsity crews down the course from the #1 position. Stroke Travis Galowski set a good rating throughout the race, allowing for sufficient power without letting the tempo increase too much, and coxswain Henry Weis held the reins tightly, calling several strides in the second half to reduce any rush on the recovery and steering a great course on a big river. The result for NMH was its strongest JV race of the year, and the boys came off the water proud of their performance against some good competition. We placed eighth overall out of the seventeen crews entered.
Thanks as always to our parent volunteers who braved the cold and dreary conditions to feed and warm the team with good food and conversation after the race. We are a lucky group to have such wonderful support on our race days!
