It was standing room only at the home opener on sunny Fung Field.
What began as a tight pitcher's duel ended as a rout, as the Hoggers scored 5 runs in the fifth, and 7 runs in the sixth, turning a 3-2 game into a laugher.
James Neary pitched 4 innings of 1 run ball, registering 5 Ks, Morgan Randrup finished up, going 3 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, with 4 strikeouts.
Every player made contributions in this win. The defense was exceptional for a cold, first game. They worked out of a bases-loaded, no out jam with a classic 1-2-3 double play. Ryan Ponte was heads-up in the field and bases, and Michael Malinconico turned in a few sterling plays at the hot corner.
Getting key hits in their first games were Riley Dickie and Tim DiPretoro. Hitting bombs in the late innings were Jeep Madison and Morgan Randrup.
The Hoggers scored in every inning, and runs were scored one through nine in the lineup.
The Hoggers travel to Exeter for a game on Saturday.
This was not the prettiest game, but the Hoggers were glad to make the long trip (12:30 - 10:30!) and come home with a win.
It took the entire pitching staff of Hassan Forrester, Jeep Madison, Morgan Randrup and James Neary to seal the victory.
NMH yielded TWELVE walks, which certainly didn't help matters. Exeter managed only six hits.
The Hoggers scored in every inning but the second, garnering a total of 15 hits.
Madison was an amazing 5-5 with 3 runs scored. Neary was on base five times, working four walks. Tim DiPretoro put together a fine 3-5 day, and played great at shortstop. Ben Salamin was a perfect 3-3, with 3 runs scored and a big grab in right field to get us out of an inning.
Next up for the Hoggers is a Saturday game at Cushing.
This was the James Neary show. James threw a complete game (99 pitches), giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits (all singles) with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. James also had 4 hits, and was a home run away from the cycle. For the second game in a row, Jeep Madison had 5 hits.
Next up is a home game with Suffield on Wednesday at 3pm on McLamore.
Despite another fine outing from James Neary (7 IP, 11 hits, 9 K's, 1 (intentional) walk, 8 runs, 4 earned), the Hoggers lost to Cardigan Mountain, which scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to break a 6-6 tie.
Today the bottom of the order did the offensive damage, with the last 4 batters going a combined 6-12.
Owen Watrous blistered a triple to straightaway center, and Josh Robinson had two key hits and 3 RBIs.
The Hoggers have a busy upcoming week, hosting Deerfield on Wednesday, and then traveling to Eaglebrook on Friday and Worcester next Saturday.
The JV Baseball team improved to 4 - 1 with an exciting back and forth game today at Eaglebrook.
Eaglebrook led 1-0; NMH jumped up 3-1; Eaglebrook took the lead at 4-3, then NMH went up for good 6-3, and held on for a well-deserved win, with a final score of 8-5.
Owen Watrous was the offensive star of the day, going 2-3 with FIVE RBI and a monster 3-run home run.
Playing his first game at shortstop, Ryan Ponte turned in excellent defense, as well as going 1-4 at the plate with an RBI. James Neary threw another complete game, registering one K against 2 BB, giving up 5 runs (3 earned). Neary has definitely been the reliable workhorse on the mound, starting 4 of our 5 games and throwing three complete games.
Also making key contributions to the win were Ben Salamin at second base, going 1-1 with 2 walks and one run scored, and Jim Wyman, who went 1-1 with one run scored. And making two very key, difficult put-outs in the last inning, Perry Holmes was outstanding.
The JV baseball team improved to 5-1 today with a solid win over the Deerfield nine.
Ryan Gravina pitched a complete game beauty, striking out 8 and walking only 3 in giving up 4 runs on 7 hits, most of them infield nubbers.
Jeep Madison hit a laser shot to left for a ground-rule double that started our big 4-run second inning. Once again, Owen "Boom-Boom" Watrous went deep, hitting a solo bomb. Madison, Morgan Randrup and Watrous all had two hits on the day.
The JV Baseball team concluded its season with a convincing 18-8 victory over Deerfield, at Deerfield.
In spite of threatening skies, seven innings were played in exactly three hours.
The offensive leaders for NMH, with three hits on the day, were Hassan Forrester, Jeep Madison, and Josh Hayden.
Of special note is Perry Holmes and his single in the last inning.
James Neary threw 6 innings, giving up 8 runs (only 2 earned) on 9 hits, with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts. Morgan Randrup pitched a scoreless seventh.
The boys had a terrific season, and posted the best record for a JV Baseball team in recent memory.
