The Diamond Hoggers hosted the Hilltoppers from Worcester academy and fell 2 - 4. Miles Schelling '12 and Sam Downes '13 handled the pitching duties for the Hoggers and were quite effective. They pitched low in the zone all day, allowing the defense to take care of most of the work for them. Defensively, the Diamond Hoggers played their best game of the season committing only one error. Unfortunately, while the Hilltoppers took advantage of their opportunities with runners in scoring position, the Diamond Hoggers did not leaving fifteen runners on base. The loss drops NMH to 1 - 3 on the season, and 0 - 3 in CNEPSBL play. On Saturday, the Diamond Hoggers will hit the road again, this time traveling to Andover for a double header starting at noon.
The Diamond Hoggers hit the road for a double header at Andover and fell twice, 10 -3 and 8 – 5. In the first game, Andover combined two errors, a missed cut, and six consecutive two-out hits to put up six runs in the first inning and they never looked back. The Hoggers were able to put up individual runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but were unable to produce a clutch hit and hang a crooked number on the scoreboard. In total, the Diamond Hoggers left nine runners on base.
In the second game, the Diamond Hoggers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Matt Zanotta ’11 hit his first homerun of season. Andover answered back with two in the second and four in the third to make the score 6 – 2. While the Diamond Hoggers threatened a comeback, leaving the bases loaded in fourth and sixth, the clutch hit was not to be as the Andover nine used solid pitching and good defense to work their way out of trouble time and time again.

Hultgren pounded the strike zone all day, consistently getting ahead of the Cushing hitters and forcing the action. The Diamond Hoggers struck first in the top of the third, scoring three runs. The score remained the same going into the bottom of the seventh when Cushing took advantage of two errors, a walk and a hit batter to make the score 3 - 2. A clutch hit by their number two hitter tied the score at 3 - 3, but the next batter lined into a double play to end the Cushing threat and send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, NMH worked four consecutive walks, including a masterful eleven pitch at bat by Miles Schelling '12, to take the lead 4 - 3 and leave the bases loaded. With one out and a 2 - 2 count, Pat Joyce '12 ripped a bases clearing double to make the score 7 - 3 and give NMH some breathing room. Cushing again gave the Diamond Hoggers a scare in the bottom of the eighth by scoring one run and bringing the tieing run to the plate, but Dillon Brown '11 struck out the final two hitters to secure the win for the Hoggers.
After an exciting extra inning win the night before, the Diamond Hoggers played host to Cushing and completed the weekend sweep by a score of 3 - 1. After earning the win in relief on Friday night, Dillon Brown '12 got the start for the Diamond Hoggers and threw a complete game, giving up only three hits and no earned runs while facing only four more batters than the minimum. Brown worked ahead of the hitters all day and knowing he was on a tight pitch count, pounded the strike zone and let the defense do the work, which they did. The infield of Andrew Penniman '11, David Rose '12, Tanner Jillson '14, and Matt Zanotta '11 made play after play behind Brown, rewarding him for his aggressiveness in the strike zone.
At the plate, the Diamond Hoggers took advantage of the few opportunities they had as Ryan King, the pitcher for Cushing, also threw a solid game. King went the distance for the Penguins, giving up only four hits. The first run came in the second when Rose singled and scored on a triple by Pat Joyce '12. The scoring ended in the third when Jon Atkins '11 singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and with two outs, Zanotta and Miles Schelling '12 hit back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 3-1.
