An alumnus and former NMH Board of Trustees Chairman Emeritus has been named Global Advisor to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak.
William R. Rhodes, class of 1953, joined Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab on the advisory group, which is tasked with recommending strategies and visions for South Korea. Members met with President Lee in October to discuss the global economy, trade flows and the KORUS free trade agreement.
Rhodes is senior vice chairman of Citigroup, and the senior vice chairman of Citibank. He served as an NMH trustee for 15 years, 12 of them as chair. He was lead donor for the Rhodes Arts Center, the school’s new center for the arts. Rhodes also established the annual Edward and William R. Rhodes Award in Economics, in honor of his father, and the W. R. Rhodes South Africa Scholarship. The Rhodes Room in Beveridge Hall was named after the Citigroup executive after he donated a significant capital gift to NMH in the 1990s.
Rhodes has worked closely with U.S. treasury secretaries, prime ministers, and presidents. In the late 1980s, Rhodes was credited for bringing stability to Latin America’s foreign-debt crisis.
