Outreach Outreach
Leadership Opportunities
Outreach Board of Directors
Students may apply or be nominated for the board after two
terms of outstanding volunteer work in regular outreach programs.
The board, which advises and supports outreach programs, meets weekly. Each member is required to lead a continuing program or
their own project.
Committee Leadership
Students take a leadership role on standing outreach committees such as
United Way and homeless candlelight vigil committee.
Project Leadership
Community Service Leadership Class
Required for board members and open to any interested
students, this class introduces the role of volunteers and
service opportunities in the local community. It also describes aspects of organizations in the community.
Outreach student service projects include:
Hogappella: an a cappella performance group
The seed for Hogappella was sown when Seong Hwan Jin, an NMH
student from South Korea, volunteered to sell cookies for
the United Way A Cappella Festival. Seong, a member of Concert
Choir and NMH Singers, was inspired
and excited by the college singers. He returned a second year to
volunteer at the event and resolved then to combine his two
passions, singing and volunteer work, by creating an a cappella
performance group at NMH that would perform for charity and the
joy of singing.
With much personal commitment from like-minded students, Hogappella has become
a hit group, singing
at both on-campus and off-campus events, including the Walk for
Hunger in Boston.
Operation Happy Birthday
Started as an outreach project by Will Perez ’04, Operation
Happy Birthday (OHB) has become a banner cause at NMH. Last year 24 children received
gifts at three shelter parties, planned and executed by the OHB
outreach committee. This year the freshman dorm where Will was
student leader are perpetuating the project with five parties
for area children. Other student volunteers are participating in
the fundraising, shopping, birthday-cake baking, games, and all
that goes into the project. Will has also taken OHB to Brown University, and OHB offices are opening in San Francisco and Washington D.C.
Other student-initiated projects
- NMH Farm Afterschool Program
- Homeless Candlelight Vigil
- Kozol’s Kids Project
Each year the outreach board of directors takes a
leadership role in ongoing volunteer sites as well as starting
new projects, a requirement of serving on the board. Any NMH
student can learn how to execute a project and develop peer
support by working with board members and the outreach office.
