Winter in the Outdoors
Winter in the Outdoors (WITOD) Students in this class use ropes,
snowshoes, skis, sleds, maps, compasses, tarpaulins, and winter boots to explore
rock ledges, foot and ski trails, and mountaintops in Vermont, New Hampshire,
and Massachusetts. WITOD caters to students from all levels of outdoor experience—novice,
intermediate, and experienced. Students with advanced skills are encouraged to
assume a leadership role within their specialty. Cornerstone outdoor philosophies
such as Challenge By Choice, Leave No Trace (LNT), and the Full Value Contract
infuse each and every activity. A feature of every WITOD class is a weekend camping
trip where students use snow and tarpaulins to construct overnight shelters.
After WITOD, students graduate to activity-specific classes such as sailing,
mountain biking, canoeing, and recreational bicycling.
