Mountain Biking
Novice and intermediate mountain biking take place fall term, and students wishing to hone their
competitive skills can sign up for the club/team that rides in the spring.
NOVICE mountain biking is open to riders with little or no
experience. Students are encouraged to bring their own bicycle to class,
but the school has bicycles to rent to students who don’t own one. These
bicycles are available for class use only, and students must agree to keep the
bikes maintained, repaired, and tuned.
INTERMEDIATE mountain bikers come to the class with proven skills
and undertake more challenging rides than their novice counterparts. Riders must
provide their own instructor-approved bicycles to take part in this class.
Programming sites used are on the ridge near the
Northfield
campus, on Satan’s Kingdom in
West Northfield, and on approved trails on
Northfield
Mountain.
Skills from the intermediate class are reinforced in the club/team, and
riders are given the opportunity to race competitively.
Mountain biking techniques, bicycle maintenance, emergency repairs, and
pre-ride safety checks are among the topics of instruction in all three classes.
Stamina and strength are developed during the term to promote safe riding and
healthy physical exercise.
