Canoeing
Canoeing starts with the basic flat-water strokes and safety
requirements, and by term’s end students are experiencing the exhilaration of
"eddy turns" and "peel outs" in moving and class II white water. As well as a
stroke-learning progression, students learn self rescue, canoe rescue, throw rope,
and river-reading skills. Because the class starts with the basics, it is open to
paddlers with novice, intermediate, and advanced skills. All equipment—including
canoes, personal flotation devices, helmets, and dry suits—is supplied by the
school. Programming sites include Tully and
Long
Lakes, the
Connecticut
and
Deerfield
Rivers,
and Barton’s Cove.
