On December 16, Northfield Mount Hermon announced that Hobby Lobby had purchased the Northfield campus, where C.S. Lewis Foundation will establish C.S. Lewis College. The move ensures the preservation of historic campus landmarks and that the beloved campus will continue as a center of education and learning.
Representatives from the three organizations – Hobby Lobby, C.S. Lewis Foundation, and NMH – met in Olivia Hall on the Northfield campus to announce the sale. NMH began seeking a new owner for the Northfield campus in 2005, shortly after consolidating the full school onto the nearby Mount Hermon campus.
As part of the sale agreement, Hobby Lobby will invest more than $5 million in capital improvement projects and operations. Subject to the appropriate approvals, C.S. Lewis Foundation plans to open the C.S. Lewis Foundation College for instruction in 2012, enroll 400 students within four years, and have a $20-million budget within seven years. The college expects to employ more than 90 faculty and staff positions.
Under the deal, NMH retains Northfield properties known as the Birthplace, Round Top, and Homestead – all critical to the legacy of founder D.L. Moody. The school retains timberlands, the golf course properties, and the East Northfield Water Company. NMH will also be able to use the Auditorium for Sacred Concert and the new owners will continue to welcome alumni visits to the Northfield campus.
