The girls' alpine ski team won the first race of the 2012 MISL (Mount Institute Ski League) season with a 238-230 point victory over second place Deerfield in today’s slalom. The girls used great team depth and consistency to notch the victory today, as they placed five racers in the top eight positions through solid, flawless skiing on a course that proved to be trouble for many of our competitors. With great preparation in practices over the past week, and impressive determination and focus during competition today, Abby Philbrick, Tory Dobbin, and Cassie Cohen secured 3rd, 4th, and 5th places, with Kinsey Crowley and Whitney Lorenze following close behind in 7th and 8th. Lilly Philbrick (11th) and Gabby Rerra (14th) added to their team’s strong results, as NMH dominated the field by placing seven skiers in the top-15.

In the boys’ race, team co-captain Pat Joyce had two fast, clean runs to earn his first career MISL victory, a great accomplishment for our #1 racer. However, DA, Mohawk, and Eaglebrook proved to have more depth, so the Hoggers had to settle for 4th place in the team result (in team scoring, we count the best five of seven racers, so depth is crucial). Nikita Geovanis and Parker Peltzer were the only two of Pat’s teammates to finish in the top-30.
This was the first in a series of six league races, where the same teams compete each week. Next up is a giant slalom back at Berkshire East next Wednesday.

The NMH girls' varsity alpine ski team placed second today, behind <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />
The boys improved on last week's result by taking 3rd place, losing to DA and Mohawk but defeating Eaglebrook, Bement, and Williston.
Pat Joyce '12 once again led the Hoggers with his second straight victory this season in today's giant slalom, as he continued to assert his dominance in the Mount Institute Ski League with two powerful runs. Teammate and co-captain Eli Tirk '12 skied well to take 10th place, while fellow senior Parker Peltzer was 17th and Nikita Geovanis '13 was 19th.
The girls had another great outing but fell just short of winning as DA took the race, 239-234. Whitney Lorenze '14 demonstrated her GS prowess as she led NMH with an impressive 4th place finish. NMH locked in four consecutive places as Whitney was followed by Tory Dobbin '14, Cassie Cohen '13, and Lilly Philbrick '13 in spots 5-6-7. Co-captain Kinsey Crowley '13 nabbed 9th. Fellow junior captain Abby Philbrick was leading the Hoggers with a 3rd place finish after the first run, but hip-checked on the pitch in the second run, and dropped well back, to 17th overall. The girls are skiing really well, and it should be an exciting series of races between DA and NMH as they compete for the league title.

In the third MISL race of the season, a giant slalom, the NMH girls' varsity alpine ski team finished second once again, while the boys matched last week's result by taking 3rd place.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
The girls raced very well as a team yet again, with Abby Philbrick '13 taking 3rd place. Tory Dobbin '14 battled through a painful injury to contribute a crucial pair of fast runs to take 4th place, in a courageous performance. Cassie Cohen '13, who has been very dependable as a consistent top finisher, had another great outing as she captured 6th place after a tough crash in the finish area herself on the first run. Like Tory, Cassie gritted it out for a solid second run. It's been a tough week for the girls on the injury front, as GS ace Whitney Lorenze couldn't compete due to an injury she sustained in training, Alana Rhodin was out of the lineup due to injury, and Gabby Rerra also crashed in the finish area after the first run and wasn't able to continue. Lilly Philbrick '13 and Kinsey Crowley '13 helped their team cause with solid finishes (9th, 13th respectively).
In boys' varsity action, Pat Joyce '12 paced the Hoggers with a 4th place finish. Eli Tirk '12, Parker Peltzer '12, and Nikita Geovanis '13 were the only other NMH racers to finish in the top-20, though Jacob Douglas '13 and James Dolan '15 had personal season-best results.
The girls are now in second place in the league, with a record of 9-2. The boys are in third place with a record of 8-7.
Next up is a non-league giant slalom at Eaglebrook on Saturday at 2:00pm. Come check out the team in action at this very spectator-friendly venue!

The girls' varsity alpine ski team won today's slalom race, the fourth in a series of six races in the Mount Institute Ski League. In yet another tight battle with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />
The girls, now 13-2, moved back into a tie with DA for the league's #1 ranking. This exciting battle for the MISL title will continue next week.
The boys' squad also had a good day, placing third (tied with Eaglebrook, behind DA and Mohawk), which was a good result considering they were without the services of team co-captain Pat Joyce (out with an injury). Senior co-captain Eli Tirk has been skiing great slalom lately, and he led the Hoggers with a career-best 5th place. Parker Peltzer had his best result, 12th place, by executing two flawless runs. Jacob Douglas and Alex Carr-Engler contributed good results with 20th and 21st respectively, and this relatively inexperienced team is making significant progress.

The girls' alpine team had another strong performance today, but had to settle for second place in a giant slalom at Berkshire East, the fifth of six races in the Mount Institute Ski League series. Behind strong skiing by Abby Philbrick (3rd), Tory Dobbin (5th), Cassie Cohen (6th), Whitney Lorenze (10th) and Lilly Philbrick (12th), the girls racked up 229 points, ahead of Miss Halls, Wilbraham Monson, and Williston by a large margin, but 9 points behind <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />
The boys' team finished 4th of 6 teams. Eli Tirk paced the Hoggers with a 15th place finish, best for NMH but not up to Eli's usual standards. Parker Peltzer was his usual consistent self, laying down two clean runs to take 16th while Nikita Geovanis was 18th. Alex Carr-Engler and Jacob Douglas rounded out the scoring (we race 7, count 5) in 25th and 26th respectively, with Alex nipping Jacob by 0.02 seconds. We were hampered by the continued absence of team leader Pat Joyce, who's been sidelined with a concussion. We hope to have him back next week.
Next week the team is off to Proctor Academy for the NEPSAC Class A Alpine Championships (New Englands). Representing NMH will be:
Abby Philbrick, Tory Dobbin, Cassie Cohen, Kinsey Crowley, Whitney Lorenze, and Lilly Philbrick
Pat Joyce, Eli Tirk, Parker Peltzer, Nikita Geovanis, Alex Carr-Engler, and Jacob Douglas
We finish up the season with a final MISL league slalom in two weeks, at Eaglebrook.

The day started with the slalom event. The courses were tight, turny, icy, with terrain changes - very challenging, technical courses that require superior skill and focus. The girls nailed it, with Abby and Cassie leading the charge (5th and 6th respectively) as NMH secured four of the top nine spots, a very impressive team accomplishment in a field of 54 girls. With each solid run by a teammate, the other girls' confidence and determination rose as they fed off this positive energy. Even when five of the first eight girls from other schools missed the same gate in the second run (through a lapse in concentration) and were disqualified, the NMH girls responded with perfect execution and smart skiing, through great preparation and focus. It is difficult to sustain this level of mistake-free performance in slalom through two runs, especially on a tough course, but the girls delivered in most impressive fashion.
In the afternoon, the girls entered the giant slalom competition in great position, having placed second as a team in the slalom. They continued to ski well, and although they settled for fourth place in a very tight race, they had built enough of a cushion from the slalom event to secure second place overall, behind
Not to be forgotten, the boys had a good race today as well. This squad doesn't have as much depth as the girls, but they performed very well and took 6th out of 16 teams, a solid accomplishment for them. Senior captains Pat Joyce (7th) and Eli Tirk (28th) led their squad in the morning GS race, and then again in the afternoon slalom (11th, 21st). Also competing and turning in some solid runs were Parker Peltzer, Nikita Geovanis, Alex Carr-Engler, and Jacob Douglas. The boys' field was especially competitive, with many talented racers in the group of 74 guys.
We had a terrific group of parents there supporting the team (and providing a fantastic lunch), and it was also wonderful to see Dick Kellom, retired longtime NMH ski coach, in attendance cheering on the team. The NMH spirit was strong on the hill today!
The team concludes its season next week (Wednesday, 3pm) with a final league race at Eaglebrook. Come on down and check out the team in action as the girls battle DA for the league title in a showdown of the #1 and #2 teams in New England.

The alpine ski team raced at Eaglebrook in the final league race of the year, a single-run slalom. The girls took second place with another solid performance, and finished second in the league season standings, with an impressive record of 28-5. The boys had a tough day on the tight course that gobbled up nearly a quarter of the racers to falls and disqualifications, and dropped back to 4th place. This was unfortunate as we were tied with Eaglebrook going into the race and needed to beat them to secure third place in the league standings, but Eaglebrook's quick and nimble racers used the tight set and home hill advantage to their benefit, and defeated us handily.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
The steady, consistent skiing of Abby Philbrick, Kinsey <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />
In the boys' race, team leader and senior co-captain Pat Joyce had a great run and finished 0.01 seconds out of first place. It was a great way to finish his remarkable NMH career, and a fitting conclusion as he came to us from Eaglebrook. Fellow senior captain Eli Tirk, also an Eaglebrook alum, had a terrific run going but straddled a gate (hence, he disqualified) as he carried a lot of speed through a tight section towards the bottom of the course, after nailing the tough upper section. Our third senior, Parker Peltzer, finished his NMH career on a high note with his best performance, 9th place. He has been Mr. Reliable, consistently turning in solid results each race. Finally, freshman James Dolan had an amazing run to take 13th place, by far his best performance as he rocked the course from the #7 seed position. Unfortunately, we only finished 3 guys (and we count 5 results in team scoring), so we were well back in the points. Ben Cole and Ian Wind each had a good run to close out their first season racing.
The future is bright for the girls' team next year, as the entire team returns. The boys will be without their top three stars -- Pat, Eli, and Parker -- and we'll miss them greatly, for all their contributions both as top performers and as team leaders.
While team racing is finished, several team members will continue individual USSA racing. Congratulations to Abby Philbrick and Pat Joyce, who qualified for Eastern J1-2 Finals next month at Okemo. They will race against the best skiers in their age group on the East coast in this elite event. Eli Tirk and Cassie Cohen were alternates.
