Boys crew @ New Hampshire championships<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
Merrimac River, Pembroke NH
Sunday, October 16th
distance: 2.7 miles downstream
conditions: mild, bright, gusty crosswinds but good water
Racing summary:
The NMH boys crew rowed two strong races at the New Hampshire championships, placing 2nd and 9th out of 29 crews in the Boys Junior 4s event. NMH and Wayland-Weston were each undefeated going into the race, with a very strong Saratoga crew also racing their top four in the event. NMH had beaten Saratoga in our first race, while W-W had beaten Belmont Hill, CRI and numerous other quality crews at regattas in Lowell and Connecticut. NMH started with W-W right on its tail, and was able to settle into a strong tempo despite the distractions of a chaotic starting area and swirling currents early in the race. Although W-W made several big pushes to reel NMH in, we covered each push and then responded with a powerful push of our own to open up some space. After 14 minutes of intensive effort, only two seconds separated these excellent crews, but Saratoga proved eight seconds faster somewhere else on the course. Round 2 goes to Saratoga, and although the NMH athletes were disappointed in the result, they were not discouraged. We beat an excellent crew in head-to-head racing (along with 26 others), and we know we can get some more speed out of the Arrows yet.
The surprise of the day was the excellent race that our Big Red rowed in the same event. This lineup could have been considered our C-boat based on erg scores and experience, but they had a great race and defeated the same Brewster crew that won gold in the JV fours last week against our B-boat, along with a host of good A crews including Derryfield and Concord. Hmmm . . . looks like we have two B-boats this fall! (and some good seat-racing ahead for these two crews) It was great to see the smiles and pride these boys felt in their accomplishment and in each other.
Thank you again to the parents who made the long trip to support our boys and feed us so well!
Next up: the Head of the Charles on Sunday, October 23rd

NMH boys crew at the Head of the Charles<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
Charles River, Cambridge MA
Sunday, October 23
distance: 3 miles
conditions: flat water, moderate current, excellent racing and spectating conditions
Racing summary:
The boys in the "Bring Me My Arrows!" raced to a seventh-place finish (out of 77 crews) in the Youth Fours event at the 47th Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday. The field was very fast at the front end, with outstanding Canadian and American clubs filling out most of the top ten places. NMH were the fastest US high school in the event this year, defeating top fours from several of our NEIRA competitors. This is the fourth time in the last six years that NMH have placed in the top ten at this prestigious race.
From the start, senior Ned Benning set a powerful tempo in the stroke seat, and his teammates Jack Prassas, Tucker Emery, and Tyler Hudgins matched his rating with quick and fluid strokes. Looking downstream as the boats raced up the long Powerhouse stretch, it was exciting to see the sharp and well-balanced catches that characterized the NMH crew amidst all the other racing shells. Driving through the Weeks bridge near the halfway point, NMH looked to be opening up some distance between Belmont Hill and Kent, who were dueling it out right behind us, but the lead crews were moving just as smoothly and with perhaps a bit more pace through the turns. In years past, I would watch from Weeks with a wistful eye as my crews would disappear around the next turn through Anderson, wondering how the rest of the race was going and not finding out till much later when I finally caught up with the boys back at the docks. Ah, but THIS year I had a smartphone. What an amazing thing it was to watch the live webcast as NMH moved around the long Cambridge Boat Club turn, and see that NMH had opened up even more distance on the trailing crews and was staying close with the leaders! Bow pair Tucker and Tyler were cranking on their oars, and Jack and Ned looked as powerful fifteen minutes into the race as they did ten minutes earlier.
The NMH varsity were guided by junior Henry Weis in the coxswain seat, who was reprising the role his father Peter held years ago for NMH at the same regatta. In a nice flourish, Henry pulled out his father's old racing tank to wear over his NMH uni just before getting in the boat - very cool. Father Peter was watching from the Eliot bridge as Henry and his crew took a great line through the famous turn, and Peter reported later that he was probably more nervous this time than he was thirty years ago. Not to worry, Dad - your boy did a great job today, as did each one of these outstanding athletes who represented themselves and their school with such stamina and skill.
