Congratulations to Tiffany Yu '14, whose vernal pools project took first place in the research category at the 2013 Science Symposium! After visiting several vernal pools at night and during the day, Tiffany identified several organisms unique to vernal pool habitats and monitored the development of salamander eggs found in a vernal pool in the Mount Hermon forest. Raleigh Yates '13 and Doug Fischer '13 took first place in the presentation category with a project called "Myth and Reality: The Story of the Formation of Aotearoa/New Zealand," in which they explored the ancient Maori myth regarding Maui the Fisherman, who brought the land up out of the ocean after accidentally snagging his hook on it. They compared this story with the present-day geologic explanation using plate tectonic theory, and provided several samples of rocks that formed underwater and were collected during their study abroad trip this past February.
