Library Course Resources

Instructional Services and Information Literacy

Teachers: Please contact a librarian to schedule an instructional session tailored to meet the needs of your class. Write to library_instruction@nmhschool.org or call: Pam Allan, 498-3360

Information literacy, which incorporates essential competencies for lifelong learning, requires students to recognize an information need, as well as to locate, evaluate and utilize that information in a variety of formats. Librarians collaborate with classroom teachers to individualize instructional sessions that promote information literacy skills including:

  • Understanding the organization of the library collection

  • Forming a focused topic question

  • Finding background information through both print and web-based reference resources

  • Determining information needs and selecting appropriate sources

  • Learning how to search the library catalog

  • Developing effective strategies to locate periodical and newspaper articles through print and electronic subscription services

  • Distinguishing between popular and scholarly publications

  • Using information ethically, including properly documenting of sources

Research Tools Tutorial: A self-guided tutorial in general research skills and in how to find resources in the NMH Library. This is only available while connected to the NMH campus network.
