Copyright Statement and Guidelines
As an educational community, Northfield Mount Hermon School maintains the belief that intellectual property rights should be honored and that fair use of published materials is a legal and ethical responsibility of all members of the community.
Only the expression of an idea may be copyrighted, and even when it is, educators need to be aware of their right to fair use which enables teaching, research and news reporting.
What is fair use?
(U. S. CODE TITLE 17, SEC. 107)
Acceptable use by someone other than the copyright holder for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research.
Guidelines for Library Reserves
The library will not photocopy materials for reserves. All photocopies belong to the teacher requesting materials for reserve.
- First-use materials require no copyright permission if they meet fair use guidelines
- Second-use materials require that copyright permission be requested. materials may be placed on reserve for another term with letter of request, or until response is received
Request permission from the Copyright Clearance Center.
