Gifts Raised for Annual Fund Last Year

NMH alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the school generously donated $3 million in gifts to the Annual Fund in 2008 to 2009 (our fiscal year ends June 30). The Annual Fund supplies nearly 10 percent of the school's operating budget.

NMH teachers are outstanding scholars and educators who continually seek professional development opportunities throughout the academic year and summer. Seventy-five percent of our faculty hold advanced degrees.

Full-time Faculty Members at NMH

Intellectually-engaged and passionate, the 90 full-time faculty members at NMH get involved in all aspects of life at NMH. They act as coaches and advisors, live in the dorms, and eat with students in the dining room. They're also driven to continually improve their skills and knowledge: they find interesting ways to collaborate with other professionals in their field, attend workshops and conferences, or spend their summers working on new degrees.

First Year of the Chat

The Chat, NMH's version of a senior prom, was first held in 1939 at a 99-room French chateau reproduction near the Northfield campus. These days the festivities take place under a gaily-lit tent on the lawn of Ford Cottage.

Birth Year of Dwight L. Moody

School founder Dwight Lyman Moody was born on February 5, 1837. Each February NMH celebrates Moody's birthday at Founder's Day with a special school meeting and vespers service, a birthday meal, and the ever-popular DwightNight, a student-sponsored dance that raises scholarship money for students in need.

Dollars Raised by Students for the Annual Fund

Each year during spring break, about 30 students spend their afternoons and evenings calling alumni on behalf of the NMH Annual Fund. In honor of the school’s 130th Anniversary Campaign last March, the students set a goal of $130,000 over the two-week calling period. They finished with a bang, raising a total of $168,351 in gifts and pledges!

NMH alumni are proud, loyal, and generous when it comes to their alma mater. Check out some of our notable alums among the 29,000 talented and accomplished who now call all corners of the globe home. Hint: A great gathering of NMH alumni can be found at NMH Reunion, held annually on the first weekend in June.

Spiritual Life Groups

Ten or more spiritual life groups are active on campus: Christian Fellowship, Deacons of the Church of Christ (Protestant), Interfaith Council, Jewish Student Alliance, Korean Christian Fellowship, Catholic Student Association, Muslim Student Association, Quaker Student Association, Unitarian Universalist Student Association, and Spiritual Seekers. Nature-based beliefs (Neo-Pagan), Native American, Hindu, and Buddhist groups also are available if there is interest. On Sunday mornings there is a nondenominational Christian service at Memorial Chapel.

Callsign for Student-Run Radio Station

WNMH 95.1 is completely student run, under the guidance of an experienced faculty member. Students who've ever dreamed of creating a play list of favorites and hitting the airwaves as a DJ can try it out at WNMH.

Students Who Volunteer Each Semester

Each semester, up to 200 students apply for placements in programs that vary in time to allow students to fit volunteering into their schedules. Popular programs include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Operation Happy Birthday, the Candlelight Vigil for the Homeless, Community Meals, and visiting nursing homes, knitting for shelters, and working with children and the Campus Nursery School.

First Year Mountain Day Was Celebrated

A tradition that dates back to 1881, Mountain Day is a surprise fall holiday, announced to the school community the evening before. With classes canceled for the day, students go on mountain hikes with classmates and faculty (seniors climb New Hampshire’s 3,165-foot Mount Monadnock). Afterward, everyone joins for a picnic featuring NMH's famous chili; vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions both are winners.

Year of the First Rope Pull

A popular NMH tradition, the Rope Pull first took place in 1884 in the woods west of campus. The event became a junior-senior rivalry in 1925, when the seniors challenged the juniors to a rope pull after having lost a softball game. In 1926 the contest was moved to the banks of Shadow Lake, where it’s held every fall.

Pies Awarded at the Bemis-Forslund Pie Race

Up to 300 apple pies, homemade by NMH Dining Services, are awarded to students, faculty, staff, and alumni at the annual fall Bemis-Forslund Pie Race, a 4.3 mile footrace through campus woods and fields.

Years the Bemis-Forslund Pie Race Has Been Run

The annual fall Pie Race is a 4.3-mile footrace named for Henry Bemis (class of 1891), who donated prizes starting in 1908, and for Gladys Hall Forslund, a Northfield alumna and wife of longtime Mount Hermon athletic director Axel Forslund. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni who beat designated times win an apple pie. Youngsters can compete, too, and win a mini pie in the Tart Race.
