September was a month of traditions and rituals at Northfield Mount Hermon. Along with all the favorite milestones—matriculation ceremonies to welcome new students, the seniors-versus-juniors Rope Pull, and the interdorm Hogolympics—NMH also honored those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
More than 100 college and university representatives attended NMH’s 26th College Fair on September 25. Twenty-five representatives came early to offer 20-minute interviews; more than 50 seniors and PG students took advantage of the opportunity, with some students going to as many as five interviews. The college representatives praised participating NMH students for asking great questions and being thoughtful and well prepared.
September was a rainy month on campus, with the NMH weather station recording 9.34 inches of rain—a new monthly record for the station, which sits atop the Cutler Science Building. This comes right after a record-setting rainfall in August, with 7.63 inches. The campus has received nearly 17 inches of rain in the last two months, which is about half the local yearly average. Historically, October is a drier month than September, so the weather station monitors report they are looking forward to more sunny days.
During the second week of classes, new students headed to Memorial Chapel for the annual matriculation ceremony. They signed their names to a book of thousands of student signatures, shook hands with alumni and the head of school, and rubbed the bronze bust of D.L. Moody for luck.
The NMH Advancement Office welcomes this year’s Annual Fund volunteers. Please watch your mailbox for news about the Annual Fund this year. The Annual Fund Challenge, led by trustee, alumnus, and former parent Steve Fuller ’58 P ’98, will match, dollar for dollar, any new gift or increase in your gift to the Annual Fund.
Rumor has it that NMH founder D.L. Moody once participated in one of the school’s “tug o’ war” competitions that would eventually become the annual NMH Rope Pull. This year, in the 85th Rope Pull, the seniors emerged victorious after a 1 minute, 6 second battle. Shadow Lake has been the venue of choice for the Rope Pull since 1926. Since then, NMH juniors have won 14 of the 85 contests, with only eight classes winning in both their senior and junior years.
