Vespers a Christmas Tradition at NMH
MOUNT HERMON, MA—Northfield Mount Hermon School presents Christmas Vespers, a service of traditional carols, scripture readings, and musical offerings December 9 at Memorial Chapel at 3:30 and 7 pm.
Come listen to the NMH Singers, Concert Choir, and Select Women’s Ensemble, which will perform a selection of movements from Bach’s “Missa in G Major, ” selected movements of “Salvator Mundi” by William Matthias, David Willcocks’ arrangement of “I Saw Three Ships,” and “Wassail” arranged by John Rutter.
This year marks the 300th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Buxtehude, one of the most prolific and influential German composers prior to Bach. NMH will feature his ancient carol “In Dulci Jubilo.”
Much of this year’s Vespers program has an English flavor, with works by three of the great English choral masters from the 20th century: David Willcocks, who fashioned the lessons and carols service, John Rutter, who wrote a great deal of choral music that we associate with the season, and William Matthias, a prolific composer.
The program is free and open to all; donations to charities that benefit local communities will be accepted.
