NMH Student Featured Speaker
at Darfur Event

MOUNT HERMON, MA—Nick Anderson, a senior at Northfield Mount Hermon School, will be the featured speaker at a Northampton-based community event and concert to benefit Darfur. Called Voices for Darfur, the event will take place October 21 from 3 to 5 pm at the Weinstein Auditorium at Smith College’s Wright Hall in Northampton.

Anderson gained national recognition as co-founder of Dollars for Darfur, an organization that has mobilized high school students to raise more than $300,000 at 2,000 schools across the country. Anderson is now Oxfam America’s Youth Ambassador to Darfur, and recently came back from a one-month mission to Sudan and Darfur, where he visited refugee camps and met with young people to hear firsthand about their lives.

Voices for Darfur will also include performances by Evelyn Harris, an internationally renowned singer formerly of Sweet Honey in the Rock, with the Kuumba chorus Harris founded; the Amandla Community Chorus, known for performing international songs of justice and celebration; 5-Alone, the award-winning PVPA jazz a cappella group; Mak’hela, the celebrated Jewish Chorus of Western Massachusetts; High Definition, the Northampton-based vocal ensemble; and AlSarah & Fatima, an accomplished Sudanese vocal duo from New York.

“The situation in Darfur remains desperate for the millions of people who have fled their homes and are living in squalid refugee camps. The need to provide them with food, water, and medical care is just as urgent now as the violence against innocent civilians continues,” said organizer Tamara Kupfer of the Northampton-based Congregation B’nai Israel Darfur Action Group. The group raised $20,000 last year for the Sudan Aid Fund of the Community Foundation of Western Mass, which was founded by leading international Darfur activist and Smith College Professor Eric Reeves, and supports organizations that run life-saving humanitarian aid programs in Darfur, such as Save the Children and the International Rescue Committee. The program is free, but attendees will be asked to donate to benefit Darfur.
