NMH Rower Fastest in the World
MOUNT HERMON, MA—An NMH junior was the fastest rower in the world in her age category after inching past a German competitor at the CRASH-B Sprints in Boston last weekend. For most of the race, Tessa Gobbo of Chesterfield, NH, and her closest rival clocked in within a second of one another. But Tessa prevailed, rowing the equivalent of 2,000 meters in 6:56.5. Her performance earned her a gold metal in the World Indoor Rowing Championships that drew more than 1,000 rowers from all over the world.
Tessa started rowing in her freshman year at NMH. Her JV soccer coach, Vicky Jenkins, was the coach of the girls varsity crew and saw potential in the 6’1” athlete. Tessa is one of the captains of the girls crew team this spring; her love of rowing, competitiveness and leadership is certain to set a tone for the team.
Tessa is also training to earn a seat on the US Junior National Team that will compete in Europe this summer. She spent a weekend in Austin, Texas, in December with the coaches of the squad and will compete at the US Rowing Junior National Selection Camp in June. Tessa is being courted by many of the top collegiate rowing programs and is as yet undecided about where to attend.
Tessa’s twin brother Andre Gobbo is also a rower, and the two enjoy a friendly sibling rivalry. With this win, Tessa is the fastest in the family, but only by one second.
