NMH Hosts an American Tapestry
of Song
MOUNT HERMON, MA—The choral groups at Northfield Mount Hermon School, under the direction of Sheila Heffernon, have put their resources together to sponsor a benefit concert for an important program, The Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Franklin County. The event, a collection of singing and instrumental American music, takes place February 17 at 3 pm at Memorial Chapel. The public is welcome to attend, and donations will be accepted. Those who attend may buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win an iPod Nano.
Several NMH musicians are Bigs, who serve as volunteer mentors through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County. Families of Littles are especially encouraged to come to the concert.
The concert’s theme, An American Tapestry, explores the many sounds of singing in America: spirituals, gospel, jazz, shape-note, a cappella and folk. The Select Women's Ensemble, the Concert Choir, the NMH Singers, the Nellies, and Hogappella will perform. Special guests include two Franklin County instrumental groups: The Clinical Notes, under the direction of Kathryn Foxand based at the Franklin Medical Center, performing jazz tunes; and Raise a Roughhouse, organized by NMH faculty member Pam Allan, playing Appalachian and blue grass music.
