NMH Gears up
for Fourth Green Cup Challenge
MOUNT HERMON, MA—Can 32 schools, acting together, reduce carbon emissions by 1.7 million pounds? That is the goal of the fourth annual Green Cup Challenge, which starts January 30, and involves four Franklin County schools.
Deerfield Academy, Eaglebrook School, Northfield Mount Hermon School, and Stoneleigh-Burnham School will compete with independent schools from Maine to Delaware to see which can reduce electricity consumption by the greatest percentage.
The kick-off event for NMH is Dinner in the Dark January 30, when the community will dine by candlelight and glowsticks to raise awareness about conserving electricity. Following that, the community will gather in Memorial Chapel to watch a live webcast by climate change experts, environmental activists, as well as actor Edward Norton. On January 31, classes in every subject at NMH will address global warming and the political influence students can have through their power to vote. Both of these events will be coordinated with colleges and universities across the country (more than 1,000 in all) as part of an initiative called Focus the Nation (www.focusthenation.org).
Throughout the month of February, NMH will screen movies with environmental topics, such as The Day After Tomorrow on February 26 and BBC's “Planet Earth” series on Fridays in February.
