NMH Dancers Offer Fact and Fiction
MOUNT HERMON, MA—The NMH dance companies present a series of dances titled Fact and Fiction May 1 and 3 at 7:30 and May 2 at 8 pm at Grandin Auditorium.
Choreographers include the students Yulong Cui ’08, Emily Jarecki ’08, Kate Hyoyoon Kim ’11, Britt Lillienthal ’08, AnnaMae Manning ’08, Fayette Phillips ’09, Althea SullyCole’08, and Julia Wright ’08. Faculty members Gretel Schatz, the dance program director; Amanda Chapin, a dance teacher; and Allison Boyd, an intern for the center for international education, also created dances for the program, which will include styles such as modern, jazz, ballet, and hip-hop.
Here’s a sampling of the dance pieces:
- “Are You On Board?” will be performed by the senior dance company. Raw sounds by Slavic Soul Party inform the dance, while conservatively dressed dancers move in and out of one another’s personal space, with attitudes ranging between warmth and coolness.
- “Sitting Fee,” explores what happens when four family groups meet at a portrait studio. Performed by Snapdragon Dance Group with guest Sylvia Schatz-Allison.
- “Wisdom 2008” is a “choreopoem” created in collaboration with the dance company members in the class of 2008. Text and movement blend as dancers share their words of wisdom.
- “Standard Pressure,” choreographed for the junior dance company by Amanda Chapin, explores the pressure students often experience when preparing to take their SATs. This piece includes comedic monologues, lots of fun modern dance, three gigantic pencils, and an 8-foot tall bubble-filled answer sheet.
