NMH Concerts Showcase World Jazz
MOUNT HERMON, MA—Jazz from around the world will be the sound of the day when Northfield Mount Hermon School welcomes the public and families of students to two free concerts October 26.
At 2:30 at Memorial Chapel, the World Music Combo Sax Quartet will perform traditional music from India and Africa, as well as American jazz. The quartet consists of two students, Brendan Ewing on soprano saxophone and Spencer Hattendorf on alto sax, and Ron Smith (the Director of NMH Band and Jazz Programs) on tenor sax, and Cliff White (an adjunct faculty member) on baritone sax.
The World Music Percussion Ensemble has lined up two African chant rhythms and a Korean drum improvisation. Student leaders of that group are Yea Kim, master Korean drum percussionist; and Indigo Dow, master Latin and African drum percussionist.
At 7:30 at Memorial Chapel, the Jazz Ensemble will perform three modern jazz compositions, which will feature students Stephen Berg on guitar, Spencer Hattendorf on alto sax, and Brendan Ewing on soprano and also sax. The Concert Band will play contemporary pieces: Fanfare for the Common Man, Flight of the Flutes, and Songs of Earth, Sky, Water, and Fire. All are welcome to these free concerts.
